Night prowler .
Last night was the 5th time in 3 weeks that my parents were awakened by either the police searching ours, and neighboring properties, for someone , or my parents themselves , have called the police when they saw someone snooping around.
My dad got up at 3:45 am to pee, and said there was someone standing right on the corner of the building . My dad watched him for about 10 minutes, and he never moved. My dad then called the police, and they came , but found no one . I am pretty sure they have not been in the building , the only thing I am missing is all my 10 mm sockets , but it weirds me out none the less. I am worried about the contents of my building , but also my parents who live on the property . Ill be installing some camera's this weekend, and left instructions with my parents to call me next time, I can be here in 10 minutes and can park around the corner and sneak up through the rear of the property like a ninja to see what is going on . We got some new neighbors 2 months ago, and I am sure it is tied to them somehow . I see what I am sure is drug activity during the day, and this all started , right about the time they moved in. Our other neighbor says he sees strange goings on all hours of the night there . I usually leave the shop by 7 pm , so I miss most of the action. Any recommendations for a camera system ? Also ,one of my favorite AC/DC songs

Hide some trail cams, look for the No Glow, pricier but won't give themselves away.
Put up a crapload of dummy cams in visible places.

I am wondering, if you got some camera footage of illicit activity, could you then take that to the police and have them investigate further or at least patrol the area more frequently?

Photos from civilians can't be used as evidence in court, but the police can sure use it to identify individuals, and know who to investigate. They have to have a chain of custody of any evidence, and when a non cop hands over images of videos it is just a clue.
Trail cams and video cameras would be good to have. Not that much expense, and peace of mind. And maybe put a few video cameras in plan sight, and a sign that video cameras are in use. Label the camera #14 or some other high number even if if you have just one. My DVR system captured some kids opening the unlocked door on a car of some people that came to visit my neighbors across the street. One of the kids had a very distinct limp or an unusual gait. The police looked at it, and said yep, we know who that is, and we will keep an eye out for him. My neighbor has a real inside, as he works as an attorney for the state AG's office.

I just put up an extensive camera system at an apartment. They are very affordable. Probably more than your needs. I would use Google. Camera systems have gotten amazing. First thing for my property manager? ID the dog pooper and kick them

I have an Arlo camera system but there are several other good choices. They are relatively inexpensive and they work just like you'd want them to. They send alerts to your phone, real time and you want watch what is going on or review various videos from when the camera had previously been 'triggered.' My system also allows me to talk with the person in front of the camera. Your problem may disappear once the druggies are aware there is a camera system on site.
Sneaking up on them when you know they are there is one option. Another is to come screeching around the corner at full blast, turn your car toward the building, lights on high beam, and slam on the brakes,

That's a great idea. Talk friendly to them, and flash the evil grin as you tell them a surprise is waiting for the prowler.
When I was young and actively snow skiing, I placed my skis next to a few pairs of much nicer skis if I had to go into the lodge. Similarly, troublemakers follow the path of least resistance. They don't even want to be found out, let alone confronted. Make other properties more attractive to them than yours, and the problem will go away.

Back at my old bachelor pad house we had a great neighborhood. Then the wife and mother of one of the families died. The dad was a total alcoholic and just sat in his chair drinking. His 16 year old son turned to a life of drug dealing and burglary. He even burgled the local cops house.
I went to the local gun range, and brought home my targets with all center hits. I put it up in my garage and it was in clear view of anyone that looked in the window of the garage door. The drug dealing burglar was arrested for his first felony when he was 16. His second was just after he turned 17. His third strike was just after his 18th birthday. 1/2 a kilo of smack, and a few pounds of weed. Off to the big boy jail. The neighborhood held a big block party in my front yard and driveway. Really, we all brought food and beer and the cop parked his patrol car in the street to keep traffic slowed down and everyone walked over and celebrated his third felony conviction. His dad died a few months later from aspirating his own vomit.

Yeah, horrible story.
Hopefully, there was no party after the dad pulled a Jimi Hendrix.

Good ideas by everyone, Fred.
After seeing multiple surveillance videos online, I would make sure the resolution is high enough to recognize people at a distance and not just at the front door. What about dusk to dawn lights or motion sensitive lights? |

Now here is a prank/boobie trap that everyone can enjoy. Note the little brass circles up the front held in place by blu-tac are large pistol primers. VERY (VERY) loud. And the bit of string is the trip wire. It won't hurt anyone will will feel like you have had your eardrums blown out.
My own design and build (thank you, thank you, you're most welcome). Have fun. |

It's hard to get a sense of scale. It's a rat trap, same difference I guess, just a bit bigger. It's got a mighty spring in it so it sets off the primers well. I screwed a bit of flat steel under it so it doesn't move about or fly to bits from the primers igniting.
I'm busting to try it out in a real situation. GF's renovation house got broken into and cost money for two complete windows and a door so I wish I'd thought of it sooner.

Put up some motion activated lighting. Criminals really don’t like hanging around in well lit areas.
