Question about PA and buying beer?

The last time I was in Pennsylvania, I walked in to the local gas station convenience store and looked for beer. Non was to be had, so I asked the chick at the counter where to buy beer. She told me I had to go to the "beer store" and I stifled a giggle.

OK, I asked where is the local beer store? She gave me general directions, and off I went. It was store the size of a regular grocery store, but all they had was beer. I liked it! So I wondered off to the cold beer area and wandered around for a while looking at the large selection. Then I noticed the sign, case sales only.

I could not get just a 6 pack, I had to buy an entire case of beer. I was going to be there for a week, so OK, a case it is. It sure was fun hauling a case of beer through the lobby and down the long halls of the hotel, but I managed.

So my question now is, are beer sales in PA still from a beer store only, or can I get it at a grocery store or gas station convenience store or someplace else, or is beer still sold in the beer store only?

I will be in the Poconos are for a week, and I ma planning my stay and looking for supplies for my stay. Gonna get me some Yuengling for sure.

The laws changed a while ago, and you can buy 2 sixes at licensed grocery and convenience stores.

Cool. That has to make it a lot easier.

Lots of states have some goofy laws about buying beer. For years in Oklahoma if I wanted to buy cold beer, it had to be less than 3.2% by volume. So virtually all microbrewery or foreign beer HAD to be sold warm. They finally changed the laws a few years back and I can buy cold wine or beer in grocery stores.

Thanks!

Wow, that all sounds complicated and like a "racket"! Here in the "down south", we can by beer anywhere, grocery store, convenience store, heck, Dollar General stores even sell beer here!!! On Sunday, you have to wait until after 12pm to purchase alcoholic beverages though.

Isn't it Utah where you still need a 'sponsor' to get a drink at a bar? (If you are from another state?)

You could always buy a six pack or two at the local bars. I did it for years.

A girl from Pittsburgh asked me to bring her back some "Iron City" when I was visiting Philly on one of my trips as a young pup.... I don't think it was a setup.

Don't ask for a six pack of Iron City beer in a Philly bar .... just don't

Crazy in Pa. Last time i bought beer there (maybe 3 or 4 years ago?) you had to go to a dispensery kind of place. One time we actually went to a bar that had a cooler with cans. Nutso.

Last summer we were in Ga or SC and there was a grocery store that had....wait for it...a BAR in it! Saw a lady pushing her cart down the cereal aisle with a cup of wine. I was like 'wtf?'. Sure enough they had a damn bar.

as Greg mentioned, the laws have changed. There are still beer distributers, where you can buy cases, 12 packs, kegs, but now you can also buy singles.

Certain licensed grocery stores and convenience stores--Sheetz, WaWa--you can buy up to (2) six packs at a time. If you want more, all you have to do is leave, put beer in car then go right back in and buy (2) more. pretty dumb.

Hard liquor--state stores only.

I have visited 41 states in my 911, and bought some beer in most of those states. It is funny that in some places they treat beer sales as not much more than selling milk. In Florida, I remember a driver through liquor store, and they handed me a 12 pack of cold beer as I sat in my car.

We have drive up windows for getting cold beer, singles to cases, right through the window.

I visited a buddy ion Dallas once and suggest we go get some beer. He said they live in a dry county, and there are no alcohol sales at all. We drove about 10 miles to a different county, and the grocery store had a huge beer selection, all cold and read for sale.

Just talked to my ex in PA. She says the same but added wine can be purchased in grocery stores.

I have brought wayyyy more non-physical/non-biological harm to myself with cheap wine than cheap beer but you can buy it all day long in the grocery store.

In Chicago you can buy hard liquor in the grocery store. Just talking.

The move to groceries came around 2010 ish. Was a boon to bar owners, as the stores had to buy existing liquor licenses (they have a limited number per municipality) with an R (restaurant) endorsement, and they had to have a sit down area where you can eat food. Drove demand thru the roof and doubled prices. Bar owners were hurting from 08 crash and quite a few cashed and ran.

In fact, any bar in Pa is required to serve food...in Philly, it was winked at-pickled eggs or bologna in a jar was enough. More strict elsewhere.

Go to Oklahoma if you think PA is nuts to buy beer.

Not anymore!

Oklahoma fixed the laws several years ago. I can buy the world's best beer, Erdinger Dunkle right from the cooler, (when it is in stock) at the gas station.

Oklahoma was the only state that was not affected by the 18th or the 22nd amendment. Upon becoming a state the constitution of Oklahoma stated that all alcohol sales were illegal. Well, except for beer with less than 3.2% by VOLUME. It took until just a few years ago to get most counties to allow cold beer to be purchased regardless of alcohol content.
