^^My wife and I had this exact conversation over the week while scrolling down a whole lot of empty programming. I asked where are the 'new' shows? I mean, since Covid hit, there was a sudden vacuum of new Springtime shows and movies ( for TV) Since then a constant repeat of the same car shows from 3 or more years ago. If the subject matter is new it's always negative "Husband's secret life" or "I knew she was going to kill me", "Gates of Hell #13"
Take Hallmark channel which is supposed to be 'wholesome' now every new episode has gay characters or the main characters are gay. Another good show is "Walker - Texas Ranger" which is a pretty good modern take on the old show, but almost right away, gay characters in love triangles. I'm not bashing gays or their love lives, but I'm not real exited about the programs I do watch, where it is constant..............

It is the nature of why large scale news companies exist to warp reality.
The focus is upon the uncommon, and in a world of billions it is able to fill a day with the uncommon and make it appear common. It is also easier to generate a reaction of fear or hatred than happiness. Large scale news company's are in the business of creating reaction rather than accurate reporting. Given the detrimental path is the easier course it follows it is the main course. On top of this generating a feeling of well being causes one to not need the news. They must serve unease for people to get fat at their buffet. |

If you don't want to watch the news turn it off . If you don't want to watch reality TV turn it off . If you don't like what's on the radio turn it off . We are all empowered to do so . In a very small way it sends a message . Maybe it will help and maybe it won't .
Life is short and there are so many positive things to do . Never be weighted down by something you dislike . Keep a positive attitude and keep on rocking ! |

I swore off ALL television and radio in the run-up to the 2016 election. I am much more at peace with life as a result - I highly recommend it!
Fear is a HUGE motivator. And ALL news relies on fear: today, what passes for "news" is really what I call Fear Porn. And while this is not new, it has grown tremendously in the last few decades. I have no time or patience for that today. ![]()

The question becomes “where and how do you stay informed “.
I do not routinely watch TV news except “weather and traffic” on the 7’s local stuff...which I record and ff to the 7’s. I have not for decades. Why anyone would unless there was a genuine crisis unfolding is beyond me. I have found a few reliable sources of information that have proven over the years to have an excellent track record without lapsing into hyperbole or fear mongering. The 24 hour news cycle is a complete abomination. We are less informed. Last edited by Seahawk; 05-23-2022 at 02:56 PM.. |

Seahawk, one great way to be informed in this day and age is have a network of people all over the world that share the local stories that might be of international interest.

The only positive thing I've found of late has been the Ted Lasso series on Apple TV.
Wish there were more in that vein.

I stopped watching all TV years ago. I was so sick of the news and all the bashing that went on. I do a quick read online of CNN and Fox and thats it. That said, Ive about had it with the little news I do read.
Lately Ive seen articles where CNN and Fox News are bashing each other. WTF? Today I read about a 15-year-old who was abducted from some kind of stadium or arena in Texas and sexually abused by a group of 8. It broke my heart. |

I didn’t realize how many others have given up on the TV “news.”
I stopped a couple years ago, my wife also, so there’s never any TV news playing on our TVs anymore. By never, I mean never! I put “news” in quotes because it’s not really news anymore, imo. It’s all a mix of entertainment and highly curated political agenda driven propaganda. The written/Internet media is just as bad, or even worse. The NYT is a joke now. The Washington Post is one small step above the Enquirer. It’s a shame. |

Now that I got my fill of news.....watching "Fistful of Dollars" on Grit TV. Next up - "For a Few Dollars More". Lee Van Cleef reprises his role as Colonel Mortimer. Great ending!

Anger, Fear and Hate
Anger, Fear and Hate...
Media / entertainment outlets (that pass themselves off as news sources) know these emotions generate & retain viewers / readers / followers - and therefore deliberately promote stories that incite these emotions among their target audiences. Sex still sells, but it pales in comparison to Anger, Fear and Hate.

I used to read the New York Times. They have the best writers and stories. Unfortunately, the paper is too politically biased. They had the best sports writers. If you find one in the trash at an airport, dig it out and throw everything away except the sports section.

I stopped that siht long ago. Yep made me angry and pissy all day and really affected the way I thin about people, good people included. About 8-9 years ago, I cut it all off and don't bother with it anymore. Still, I read a bit of it here and there, that's it, nothing in depth.

Funny with the internet we have the world at our fingertips and yet its difficult to find good analysis. Probably this is the correct state of human existance. Go back and watch network news of the past 50 years and its always been unbelievably bad.
I remember around the turn of the millenium someone mentioned how bad the news channels were. I knew cnn was awful from watching during foreign travel but they insisted it had morphed into something even worse so I gave the others a watch. 20 years later I am still really surprised that stuff is watched. Is like the worst parody of itself. So I still don't watch my news. In the old days there was wall street week with louis ruckhauser. Remember that? Entertaining and inciteful, players in the market explaining their positions. There's still 'week in review' on pbs but as I've gotten older the conjectures of the people on the show have become less believable and so less interesting. Used to read the economist cover to cover every week but the editor died in the late 90s and I thought it went to hell, began spoon feeding to american audience. Probably the best general writing and thinking I see today is in the new yorker, but thats just a weekly and not really supposed to be a news source and who knows what will be covered. But the writing is insanely good. Ars technica comment section (hmm, also conde nast) is always full of gold but that is just recreational science. I also dislike the bias in the nyt but I think its pretty much the best news source there is. For finance I really like Michael Cembalest at JPM, he writes a newsletter called 'eye on the market' that has kick ass graphs that often ROCK my intuition. |

Why have PARF if we can just trash Fox and CNN, then toss in some old fashioned gay-bashing right here in off topic?
