Ford Maverick - $20K hybrid small pickup, 40 mpg
Ford is on a roll. $20K for a small hybrid pickup truck that gets 40 mpg. 2022 “Maverick”. Hopefully it’ll eventually come in standard cab too.

I just watched a Doug Demuro review on this truck on YouTube this morning. Hmm, interesting.

To sell any new car for 20K is tough. To sell a hybrid at 20K is something I will believe when I see it.

That's an Escape based vehicle built in Mexico.

The 1999 Ranger was 187" long.
This one is 197", but with seating for 4, and will still carry 4x8 sheets as every truck should. Still it's not 250" (additional four feet longer) like the F250.

I actually like it, I could see it replacing my Taco and BMW. I'm sure by the time you get a decent one with AWD it will be up past 35k.

I think it’ll be a hit. It fills a niche that’s been underserved by the ranger and Colorado size and price wise, and seems like they really thought out the features.

That’s still a fair bit cheaper than a ranger or taco though. Load either of those out and you are pushing 50k, and they are both almost the same size as a half ton these days.

A real truck frame at 20K? I think not.

Unibody platform from Escape and Bronco Sport.
Not a lot of development work needed which keeps costs down. |

It uses the new Bronco platform, so unibody. Not sure why a body-on-frame is needed for a light duty vehicle like this - rated payload in the bed is 1,500 lbs, that's going to be plenty for the target user.

One thing I'm not thrilled about is that initially they won't offer AWD + hybrid. I have to think it is possible for later.

I like it and I think it fills a real niche. My biggest knock on most of the current “compact” trucks is that they cost about the same as a 1/2 ton. This seems to slot in nicely as an intermediate truck with enough capability to suit most buyers. Resist the options and it seems possible to get a nice little daily driver truck for about $30k.

I'll admit to being ignorant about the Ford power trains.
Which engine option is going to give the 'sportiest' driving feel to one of these, all the while knowing full well it is a truck, not a sports car. Gas mileage is the one thing that has most kept me out of a pickup. So will the hybrid suffice for 'sporty'?
