Strangely the three times I've shot with a laser they helped me realize I was yanking the trigger and flinching... so from that perspective they are a great training tool. My recent acquisition. I plan to shoot it so I changed the grips from the original wood grips to the Pachmayr finger grooved black rubber grips.

So I'm going to the range tomorrow with a neighbor friend and his wife. He asked me to go. I don't think he's shot his 9mm in years. She's never handled a gun. I suggested a basic gun safety class but that was deemed 'unnecessary' ..... I'm always apprehensive - whether at a range or hunting - about being around people with guns I'm not familiar with. Not really sure if he expects me to teach her or what. Hoping he has some really disciplined gun handling skills and I won't need to be involved. Wish me luck

RE: Lasers.

I was one of those people 20+ years ago. There was a demo night at the range, so I tried something (don't remember what it was) with a laser. Could. Not. Hit. Anything. Turn the laser off, no problem. So I've got a laser that came with my Walther P22 that I haven't used yet. Will try tomorrow and see what happens

What about the Glock 19 Gen 3?

I am looking for my next competition pistol. I have pretty much narrowed it down to either the Canik Mete or Canic Rival. Both are highly rated and optic ready. They have a lot of the features of some of the more expensive "striker fired" pistols on the market. The only drag is that I would have to change my entire rig or get a complete second one.

Send or drop off a copy of Lt Col Jeff Cooper's 4 rules of firearms safety TODAY. Make sure they received it.
Advise them that it is mandatory that they know them if they want you to come.

I'd take a gen 3 before a gen 4. Frowned upon? I don't sense that but Glocks are no BBQ guns and there are no bragging rights in owning one. If you want to brag get get something exotic. If you want to have a competition firearm you spend for the stuff that has super high accuracy. If you want reliable to go bang when the SHTF, easy to maintain, and great resources of parts and assistance; then you get a Glock.

I'm hoping for either an empty range or a full range with maximum noise to scare the crap out of her and into a class

If you are able, you may want to bring a few samples of different firearms.
22lr revolver, 22lr semi auto, 9 mm...
This way if the guy only has a .40, you can provide something for her to try out.
Leave the 10 mm or .50 cal home

Beautiful old Python you've got there.

I know tastes vary a great deal, but I've never been much of a fan of rubber grips on revolvers. I know a lot of shooters like them because they feel they reduce the "sting" of recoil a bit with the cushioning affect they offer. I have found, however, that for me they are actually very uncomfortable to shoot. I don't like the way they grab the skin and twist it.

I also don't think that checkering is all that great of an idea on wooden grip. Then we get that "cheese grater" affect that is pretty uncomfortable. So, my favorite after many years of experimentation, is smooth, uncheckered wood.

Here is my Python, outfitted with a set of "Roper" grips from Steve Herrett of Idaho. Steve will even cut these to size for you if you send him an outline of your shooting hand. I have these on a Model 19 as well, and really like them on both guns.

I would not go. Joe is being nice and his advice is spot on, but I’d get them away from the range first to get an idea what I am dealing with and what exactly they want.

I have a range on my farm and do this a lot. The “unnecessary” comment is a red flag.
