Along those lines, FBS really needs to be whittled down and move out teams like Middle Tennessee and others. Let them get in a division where they can win and compete for their own national championship.

Most teams play "cupcakes" before rivalry weekend. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...5b32bb5d9d.jpg

It's not just the SEC, they all do it. I complied this list in less than 5 minutes of cupcake matchups this season:

Texas: LA Monroe
Penn State: Ohio and Central Michigan
USC: Rice and Fresno State
Oregon: Eastern Washington
Clemson: Furman and LA Tech, plus most in conference games

That was just hard to watch. I turned it off when Tenn #5 defense about got into a fight with SC's Head Coach, well at least was giving him lip.

Meanwhile, earlier in the day the missus and I were at a cold and rainy Kyle Field. That place emptied out after the band played at the half. Which, if you've never seen the Corps of Cadets Band it is really something to watch. From earlier this year:

This 'throw the goal post in the river' is a new thing I believe. Back in my day (the 80's), there was a very large piece of a goal post hanging in a restaurant/bar on Cumberland Ave, aka 'The Strip'. College Inn or Old College Inn I think was the name.

Anyway, they forgot to play defense, which is the thing that usually catches up with teams that score 50 points per game. I'm happy for them and getting that monkey off the back, but if you look at the Bama and Florida games, those were close and near loses due to inability of the defense to get stops.

Now if A&M can just beat LSU this weekend

matthewb0051 11-21-2022 07:23 AM

I forgot to add: I kept seeing the USC cheerleaders on TV Saturday and couldn't help but laugh a bit.

What a terrible call by the ref.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Sooo... Purdue had a pick six erased because LB Jalen Graham was high stepping from the 30 yard line and the refs called him for unsportsmanlike conduct 😭😭<br><br>Such a lame call. 👎 <a href="https://t.co/RG78iUBnQx">pic.twitter.com/RG78iUBnQx</a></p>&mdash; 𝗙𝗢𝗟𝗟𝗢𝗪 @𝗙𝗧𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗱𝟳 (@FTBeard7) <a href="https://twitter.com/FTBeard7/status/1594044337721311232?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">November 19, 2022</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

matthewb0051 11-21-2022 07:27 AM

^^^^
But apparently its OK now to spike the ball in the endzone? I've thought for a couple of years now that the refs need to tighten up their shot group. (and I usually don't blame stuff on refs or police)

stevej37 11-21-2022 07:33 AM

I know it's pro's but the whole team getting together in the end zone for a group photo after a td is getting ridiculous.
The days of players like Barry Sanders is over. After every td he scored...he would hand the ball to the ref and walk back to the bench.

You forgot the part where I noted the timing of the scheduling. I haven't looked but suspect all the games you noted were before conference play began, versus getting a break during the heat of conference season.

Having cupcake games earlier in the season is much more ideal than later in the season because it gives a team a better opportunity to work on things before the games that really matter take place....ie: conference games.

Most teams have new players...many have new coaches....and also new offenses and defenses.

A cupcake game early on, essentially gives a team more scrimmages to get things "figured out".

I don't how anyone cannot understand this basic premise.....

The teams with one CC game was typically early. Those with 2 were spread out. Not that they are any good this year but A&M had App State early and should have beat them, then had UMass last weekend right before LSU this weekend.

I hate the entire thing though. If you need a CC game, play Wake early out of conference, in other words at least stay within Power 5 or Group of 5. Some of these games may as well be against high school teams.

Your argument would have more validity if that team had an overall strength of schedule past #30, say.

I don't know how anyone could make that argument against a top 30 strength of schedule team.

If you say those games are boring to you - that's a whole different discussion.

But somehow implying that team should play tougher teams when their schedule is already one of the toughest in the country just doesn't hold water.

HobieMarty 11-22-2022 06:54 AM

Y'all do realize that the schedules are made years in advance right?

The cupcake of today could be the powerhouse of tomorrow.
