Recharging a dehumidifier

The unit that I run in the basement no longer removes water from the air so I'm thinking recharge time.

I don't think it is difficult to do but my questions are:

Does the type of refrigerant matter? I haven't cracked it open yet and I'm thinking the type should be posted inside.

Can I buy refrigerant without being an HVAC guy?

Should I do this myself?

quick search on google reveals dehumidifiers use R410A

You can buy that on ebay.

Should you do it..... That's up tp you

My guess is the HVAC guy will charge (dollars) more than what the unit is worth

Open the units cover. Look for what refrigerant it uses. It will all depend on how old it is, and when it was made. If you have gauges, give it a try. Most refrigerators and dehumidifiers use very little refrigerant, so be stingy with the recharge, it is easy to overcharge them.

Read up to see what pressures, or more likely, watch YouTube for how to do it.

I use a dehumidifier in my basement and another in my garage...year around.

I have had a few of them quit working and brought them in to a local appliance shop for repair. Every one that I brought in...I was told they had leaks and weren't worth the time and cost to fix.

The two that I have now, are about 3 years old each....I'm happy with that.

Check out a few YouTube videos on how to do it. I had the same thing happened to one of my dehumidifiers. After looking at the YouTube videos it appears at almost every one of them had a leak that needed to be repaired. I decided it wasn’t worth the trouble and just bought a new one.
