There was some remaining energy to manage.

Today's pros made it boring...figured out the break too well, using a cut break at a cue ball speed of around 18 mph, with a wing ball in the corner and 1 ball often in the side. Only excitement comes wondering if the breaker has a shot on the post break object ball.
I miss the old "smash em" days...(edit) Here's a short video of one of today's young guns explaining his break:
