Granny's Biscuit Bowl
My Granny used to make the best homemade biscuits and she always mixed up her dough in this bowl. My Grandparents built their house in 1948 and Mom said that Granny had this bowl many years before that. Pawpaw made her a large pull out cabinet where she kept her flour and this bowl. The bowl was very pale, maybe from the wood drying out mostly but could've been from the decades of flour that was mixed into dough. I wanted to preserve this little part of my family history so I used some cutting board mineral oil and a beeswax/mineral oil paste and rubbed it into the wood to restore it's original honey color. Mom said she remembers it looking like this.
Granny used to get up every day at 4:30am to make her biscuits. I can see them now, golden brown, split one open and watch the steam release into the morning air and quickly put some butter in between the two halves and let it melt, then open it back up and drizzle some Golden Eagle syrup all over it and savor each bite. Oh man, what I would give to have one of her biscuits again. Maybe I will make some from her recipe and make them in her bowl!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk

My memories of my Grannie are of her homemade bread.
I have never had any bread that compared to what she made. She sliced it about an inch thick and with butter on it...I could die for it.

I have my granny’s gravy mixing spoon. She was left handed, and after a lifetime of stirring gravy in a cast iron pan it is ground down flat on one side.
And yea, I have her cast iron skillet, and even better the cast iron Dutch oven.

I searched high and low and found an exact duplicate of my Grandma's biscuit serving bowl. She always put a cotton towel into the bowl to keep the heat and steam in.

Very cool. I'm sure that was probably carved by hand.

What a great family heirloom to have saved. I can almost see it in its heyday, dusty with flour and edges polished smooth from hours of granny's hands hold it. You did a good thing saving it.

Man do I miss my grandmother's ricotta and rice pie. The recipe died with her, and no one has been able to reproduce it.
The aroma of fresh biscuits and bacon in the morning is hard wired in my brain and always makes me happy.

Thanks so much guys. Mom doesn't know how old the bowl is or where Granny got it from, she thinks an elder family member probably gave it to her, and yep, it looks to be hand carved that's for sure.

Great find.
Funny how we cherish things that bring us memories as we get older.

I really love when I can use a tool or object that has been used by an ancestor or other ancient person.
Grandpa’s fly rod Great grandpa’s hand plan Grandma’s book You get it. There is a continuity. Your bowl certainly has this. Super cool. |

It's cool that it was your gran's. And a stylish bowl that you can use.
