Dad want me to have pistol. Do I need permit first?
Dad in North Carolina and has a gun and apermit for it. Can’t find the permit and my sister down the street has the gun.
They want me to have it and I live in Ohio. I’m in NC for two more days. What is the short but legal version of what I need to do? |

Since you're bringing it back to Ohio you may need to get it transferred to you thru an FFL. Start with the gun laws where you will keep the gun.

Media > News Releases > June 2022 > Ohio’s Permitless Carry Law Goes into Effect Today: Here’s What You Should Know
News Releases Search News Releases: Ohio’s Permitless Carry Law Goes into Effect Today: Here’s What You Should Know 6/13/2022 (COLUMBUS, Ohio) — Ohio today became the 23rd state to allow citizens to carry a concealed handgun without a permit, and Attorney General Dave Yost said firearms training is more important now than ever. "Just because you're not legally required to get training doesn't mean it's not a good idea," Yost said. "Using a firearm is not instinct, and watching TV shows is not training. Ohioans should learn how to handle their firearms from a qualified instructor. A trained citizen is a safe citizen." Yost noted that "constitutional carry" does not mean Ohioans can carry a concealed weapon everywhere. The laws limiting guns in certain places still apply. "Not only do you need to know how to safely use a firearm, you need to know the law--about transport, self-defense and more," Yost said. The Attorney General published an updated manual reflecting the changes in the law on his website. The updated manual reflects the two ways to legally carry a concealed handgun in Ohio. The law preserves the state’s existing concealed-carry licensing program which results in a photo-ID card but now allows Ohioans over the age of 21 the option of carrying without this permit. The same laws, rules and prohibitions that apply to those with a permit also apply to Ohioans who choose to carry without a permit. To learn more about Ohio’s concealed carry laws, and to find information about trainers, please visit www.OhioAttorneyGeneral.gov/ConcealedCarry. Video available of AG Yost's remarks regarding the new law upon request. To receive video, please email jonathan.quilter@ohioago.gov. MEDIA CONTACT: Steve Irwin: 614-728-5417

Bob, there is no such thing as a permit for a pistol here in NC.... but you do need a permit to buy one (at least from a gun store) that one acquires from the Popo.... but it goes to the store upon purchase.
I have no permits fwiw .... so quit looking .Don't know squat about Ohio ... except that the Dawgs are gonna kick their butts ![]() edited: You can also open carry here (no one does), and transport one as long as it's not concealed within reach, with no permit.... just FYI Last edited by KFC911; 12-05-2022 at 02:23 PM.. |

I look at this scenario as your father is " gifting " the pistol to you . I would approach a gun shop in NC because you are there and ask how to gift the pistol to you . If it has to be transferred via FFL they can start the process .
It must be similar to when you inherit a weapon after someone passes away . Just need to figure out the correct way to process the exchange . Good luck |

Good advice all. I’ll go to a gun shop tomorrow..
KC - Saw an open carry guy this morning at a restaurant we had breakfast in. The old man did confirm he obtained a permit to buy.. my sister said he “had a permit If Georgia was ranked a little higher, I might be worried. ![]() Thanks guys Last edited by Bob Kontak; 12-05-2022 at 02:38 PM.. |

Delete this thread and just don't say anything. I am glad that I live in a free state, I have bought a few private purchase guns Last week and the only paperwork that had to be transferred were the Ben Franklins.. Of course a major part of why I was willing to purchase is that I knew the seller, and when I buy a gun, I take a picture of their drivers license and carry permit. If they are not willing to do that, it is a major Red Flag

I’m just going to keep quiet on this one, not sure why you’d do anything other than safely transport it home.

.I chatted with the other in a fast food joint years ago .... I felt totally safe ... 'cause he was gonna be the obvious first target .What flavor of spoon? |

. I've never had a permit, and when I lived in Jax, and on many visits, I'm quite sure I had my gun in the car illegally. But I have never carried except concealed .... while on my own property. When I enter my rural property, the baby Ruger goes in my front pocket.

If you want to follow the law, you need a Pistol Purchase Permit from the local Sheriff.

Sure, protect your rights by not knowing what the laws regulating guns in your state are and run the risk of prison.

.I have three spoons, purchased by my dad for me (my $$$) before I turned 21 and could purchase handguns myself. There is nothing illegal about them either. |

Personally, I'd haul it home, and not tell anyone.

If you don't go get it (and have NC ID to get a pistol purchase permit) or just lock it in your trunk and take your chances, you will need to go through an FFL and have it shipped to you.
