How do you display your wheel collections?
I spent thanksgiving weekend doing this:

FWIW - I remember a fairly peaceful thread years ago where guys were talking about putting different colored LED lights in their 911 gauge clusters. Out of the blue, a good handful of posts into the thread, Warren Hall (Early S Man) descends on the OP and lit him up for losing his mind regarding the dash lights. Warren was pretty stable and a wealth of knowledge but it triggered him in a big way. I suspect it was later in Warren's life and it was a get off my lawn moment. Your lights have nothing to do with your Porsche presentation, the colored lights just reminded me of Warren's (RIP) post.
As to your setup, it's good to get them off the ground and it's a robust set up. I bet after some contemplation you will be able to configure them a bit snappier to maximize the colored light impact. Don't be afraid to put a couple in the basement as less can be more.

I usually leave them lying around on the front lawn to annoy the neighbours. But that's a good idea.

I have seen a lot of weird collections. Why collect wheels?
Whatever, different strokes for different folks. I do have my old 15 inch Fuchs in my attic. Not on display, and I only kept them because I know they are coveted, and I may want to go back to them for an autocross only tire.

I like what you've done. Gets 'em off the floor so you have room for more sets of wheels. I've got some Style 5 BMW wheels you can have cheap.
When you make it to the next level you can display just the fans off the race wheels up in the rafters! ![]()

I'm sure any number of graphic designers could import a file into illustrator, scale it to match your wheel diameter and take it to a wrap shop and have four vinyl discs printed in any color you wanted.

Ted, the Camaro looks terrific with those fans. Gold 'baskets' would be awesome.

I lovvvvvvvedddddd Trans Am / GTO back in the Scott Pruett/Tommy Kendall/Willie T Ribbs/Paul Newman days. The cars were just the right amount of speed and power and handling and sound and the drivers were approachable. (Okay, not Paul Newman. Nobody got to talk to him).

I could see if you were a car guy with enough money, and went through lots of cars and wheels over the years (maybe have a few cars and take them to the track, maybe have winter wheels, etc...) how you could end up with a bunch of sets of wheels. I don't know that I want a collection, but I'd love to have a Fuchs, any Fuchs of any size, only one. It's iconic and something that I'd like to have. I would also like to have an old knock off wire wheel from a British roadster. And yeah, an old wide race wheel with a fan would be friggin cool. I could also see myself having one of a few others, they'd go great on the walls of a garage. So, yeah, I guess I could see myself having a small collection of 5-10 wheels (just one, not sets).

I mean.... aftermarket cools are usually cooler than OEM wheels. Having a variety of wheels to swap on your cars lets you have snows, all seasons, high performance summers, etc. Plus like, they look awesome! And they're fun to nab deals, trade, sell for profit, etc. Idk. I love having wheels man. If I had more room and more money I'd have so many wheels!

Yep trying to slow the slicks from drying out over the winter. On the durometer the slicks double in hardness by the last (8th) heat cycle. A racer buddy suggested coating them with WD40, saran wrapping and stored under a car cover. The racers with a big tire budget like to say "the good is gone after the first 3 laps". ![]() Tried the Hot lap rubber softeners for the final heat cycles but the process is too messy for me. ![]() Good news is both my race cars use the same size bias ply slicks. 13x25 and 14x27 ![]() |

Have you run any fans on the track? With the race cars and modern Project Mu brake pads on a cool day need to block the brake cooling air intake or they run too cool. Currently just 6 sets, 3 sets for each race car. I was bummed when 4 of my BBS basket weave rims failed crack check. All around the lug nut area. So they are used in the shop or for transportation. At my peak had 6 more sets when I had 2 911s. So 12 sets was the most for me at one time. Only display them on the car at the track. |
