I saw a flatbed big rig truck hauling about four of those trucks headed south on I-85 today.

Dorky, but it’s a mail truck. Not exactly designed to be an object of lust.

+1 on not an object of lust. Functional!

From Steve's link:

"Oshkosh execs related the story of a USPS test driver who burst into tears after the drive because the new vehicle was so much more comfortable and usable than the LLV they drove every day."

The Grumman LLV

Many parts from the LLV migrated from the Lunar Ascent Module. Primarily, interior space and rivets.

Somebody could craft a better joke comparing the two but they are both pretty spartan.

Canada Post has re-equipped locally with units that follow the old Grumman Curbmaster box shape, but at 80% scale and built on a 4 wheel drive chassis which, I suspect was sourced from the Ranger. Also they are right hand drive to allow easier access to rural mail boxes, a feature which may not be needed in a few years.

Makes me smile.

My first vehicle of any kind was a three wheel mail truck that looked like this when I bought it:

My Dad and I fixed it up and I, 11 years old, would put my bike in the back and drive the two miles of dirt road to Borchard Road...then bike to school.

Freedom is just another word for a three wheel mail cart

So they have built just 612 of them, and spent 3 Billion dollars?

Ugly vehicles for almost 5 million each. I hope the can get the cost per vehicle down soon.

That's so FedUpd .... Another government project.

The Rivian Amazon delivery vans cost around 80k. I'm sure they can make a shorty version

There was one of these parked outside the USPS headquarters in Washington DC recently.

Not as bad looking as you'd think, and evidently drivers love it. Add some deep dish Fuchs in the back to fill out the fender wells, and you've got a looker.

I'm surprised (not really) about the hoopla about whether they should be electric or gas (I believe they're made both ways). This seems like the most basic math calculation based on route stops and distance so they should be matching each vehicle drivetrain selection to specific route and nothing else. They could even have big and small battery options based on route. Definitely an engineering problem and not a political one.
