I've never heard of that.
Seems easier to pop the crown off and then drill.

But, I'm not a dentist...there must be a reason.

(not a dentist here but)
The bonding of the artificial crown to the existing tooth is essential.
Any gaps or overlay will be places where food will get stuck.
Bacteria eats the food, and decay begins with their acidic poop eating through the natural protective enamel.

New replacement material can't be stuck to porous and rotten tooth material. It wouldn't last long.

Crowns these days are generally harder and more brittle than existing tooth material.
They actually should be softer, to eventually wear and conform to the mouth and bite pattern IMO.
Gold did not seal the gaps but was softer.

Roots will die and pull back somewhat when the top of the tooth is removed, but if the entire thing rots then it needs to be removed and filled.
Root canals are generally painless because most has died already.

But on the subject of crowns, it's good to be the King.

But how does the dentist seal the crown after drilling through it?

I’ve had multiple root canals and it’s been hit or miss as to whether there was pain or not. I’ll never forget this one dentist, pushing the file in and out and I don’t know what they hit, but they had to bring me down from the ceiling

I had an abscess occur many years after a root canal and they went through the gum. I was nervous but it was the easiest thing I’ve ever done.

OK, not the easiest, but at least it wasn’t painful.

An endodontist did my root canal and then I had to go to the dentist to have the holes filled. The gift that keeps on giving.

What I found strange is the crown is hollow.

^^^ Ok...I see.
I had to have one (crown) removed a few years back. Dentist grabbed it with some weird pliers and twisted and pulled it off. It felt like the whole tooth was going. When he was done drilling and filing, he re-glued the crown back on.

My dentist for over 45 years was Dr. Cleaver.

He up and retired on me. I had to get a new dentist and she is a ton prettier than he was. ;)

try a white gold crown , then you wont look like a gangsta. I did that. my brother was a technician so he made it for me from the impressions the doctor took. funny it was my dentist that encouraged me to buy a 944. I'm sure in his trade he can afford something fancier, but he had an appreciation for the 944 and said they are climbing in value and I was considering one that a friend owned.

When we lived in Westport, there was a doctor named Dr. Doctor. Worked at the Fort Apache medical offices.
