The stream of short length videos also mess up adolescents with learning/attention spans.
Tik tok is also very low level of entertainment that does not progress a population. Hence why the ccp version (algorithm) promotes academic content and Americas' is shaking tits and ass.

You keep trying until you find stuff you like then drill down. Way easier than a 90 minute documentary on Stonhenge. I hang out with a lady and I hear her talking to friends. They talk about how well they are doing fighting the urge to burn time on Tiktok and Instagram.

The problem is another government is harvesting the data.

I do not do any social media or junk like that. Way too easy for people to start collecting data on you to try to rip you off or worse. The only thing I ever do is car-sites, like this. It seems social media, sooner or later, bites users in the butt. If it is Chinese-based, forget it.

It probably depends. WHen you access a site via a browser the browser will make certain information visible/available to the site. It's even worse when you use an application on your smart phone. When the application gets installed, it requests "permissions" on your phone, probably things like - access to contacts, camera, microphone, etc..." Most folks when they install an app just click "allow" when that pops up. Giving an app permission to access stuff is not necessarily limited to what you'd think. "I'm not making a video, so they shouldn't access my camera or microphone" That may be true, but that doesn't mean that they don't access camera and microphone when you wouldn't expect. Hell, maybe it's taking photos of you while you watch their videos. Maybe it listens in. Maybe if it has access to your browser, contacts, whatever, then it's uploading list of ever site that you surf or all of your contacts to some server somewhere.

Right. Yes, all huge companies are gathering as much data as possible on EVERYONE as much as they can. And with enough data, they can use analysis to not only figure things out about people that wouldn't be expected, but they can also steer people by showing them certain things.
The problem is that the Chinese govt has no compunction about violating civil rights personal privacy or what most folks would consider morals or ethics. The Chinese govt is willing to do whatever they want to anyone they want to promote their goals. Anything that comes out of China, is potentially heavily controlled by or in bed with the Chinese govt.

I think this tiktok stuff is a stupid distraction, anti-china hype. Read about 'Cambridge Analytica' these companies hoover up everything they can, monetize it however they can. Facebook gave access to everyone's data to a scummy company in london who copied it for themselves then resold it.
Can anyone say where that citizen's united database went? Dollars to doughnuts that data is current held by every big country, including china. How much risk is any politician taking by standing up and mouthing off about tiktok and china? Zero. Banging the drum and pretending to do something. For me to care I'd want an actual 'fix' for consumer privacy. How about I get to own all the data about me? Pass a law where I can make it illegal for a company to possess data about me? Zap. Anything less is unenforceable and has no consequence. Want to focus on china specifically? Check out what they're doing to the uighurs. Massive work camps. Denounce china for what they are and pull out of the trade deals with them. Recognize taiwan. Tiktok is a dumb racist distraction with no real consequences, its manufactured issue to make political hay. |

Never had it, my wife and kids don't have it. We also don't have Farcebook either, I used too, but shut down my FB account many years ago. This forum and a couple of other forums are about the extent of my social media interaction.

The algorithm for the videos (that, yes, is targeted at making your kids dumber) is just the tip of the iceberg. It's not just the fact that you're watching TikTok videos; it's the program/app itself that then burrows into the rest of your phone. It does track you; it does have the capability to get your passwords to other apps (like your bank), etc. There is a VERY good reason it has been banned from use by any government phone/device.

That's a pretty good reason to NOT give them more access to you than they already have.

It is a multi-way path.
They pick what gets seen, and it can focus in and find where to hook people. The problem with Tik Tok is the users can be converted to puppets.

Yes, but it's not just that. It's what information the app can be programmed to gather from your mobile device. And the reason that they can do that is because when most folks download an app, they don't look at the required permissions either when looking at the app on the app store or when having to click "OK" to grant the permissions once installed or the first time the app is used. That's probably even more dangerous than the other. Or maybe it's a toss up or flips back and forth between the two after various OS updates or whatever.

Has my data and controls what I see, it's a feedback loop.
Put a microphone in front of a speaker it is connected to and the feedback combo makes the question of which is worse less important. Quote:

The issue with tik tok is the algorithm that promotes a focus of competition. In the western hemisphere it accents sexual content as apposed to educational content. The algorithm instills competition in one hemisphere in the primal urge and the other in a mental stimulus. The population will trigger on either stimulus. one physically twerks and the other competes cerebrally. its obvious which society is advancing and which is regressing.

As an aside, this is more reason to restore our society to its original focus on individual liberty. As our society degenerates the more government intrusion there is, the more emphasis on trying to prevent individual failure the more tyrannical it becomes increasingly disallowing higher performing individuals to excel.
The old adage that socialism allows everyone to fail equally is not fiction. |
