Need computer help!

I haven't used a PC in 20 years, so I'm not at all conversant with them. I manage to stumble through using this machine controller PC, but that's about it.

I have been told we need a new computer for our Innova long arm quilting machine. There is an app we need to use that requires Windows 10 and the computer we have apparently can't support Windows 10. It is also 9 years old. So - new computer time.

The primary use for this computer is to run the Mach 3 CNC app that controls the sew head. I have a call in to Innova support to find out the speed and storage requirements for their version of Mach 3, but I'm assuming if I can find a machine that has the physical attributes it can be configured internally to match our requirements.

I've looked and looked and can't find a newer equivalent to this HP all in one touchscreen with the rear mount except in industrial panel computers that are $$$!


Help me find a computer, please.

Assuming you’re looking for a small footprint, I’ve always been curious about mini-PCs but never used one. That’s where I would start if the necessary performance can be met.

You're looking for an AIO (all in one) but also with a touchscreen... Those mounts are standard anyway.. Not THE most common thing at a best buy but they're out there.. At the hospitals we use Dells primarily..

Other brands have it, just search AIO and touch screen, and make sure touch screen is picked as an option when ordering... You could possibly also go with a surface tablet, that's also touch (obviously since it's a tablet) but I am not sure how big they make them (likely not as big as you can get a PC, like 27") nor do I know if they have a backside mount. HTH

23 inch touchscreen can be had for $250ish. Just make sure it has a VESA mount which is not hard to find at all.

Then an Intel NUC, another ~$600 gets you core i7 with 16 gb of ram.

Velcro it to the back of the monitor.

I like all in ones but the problem is if the display side dies the processing side is useless and vice versa.

All in under $1k.

There are lots of options. A laptop is likely the easiest, but not the cheapest option.

A NUC and a 21 inch touch screen is easy as mentioned just above.

I like this solution. We have a portable stand with a keyboard and mouse so we can operate the computer from the touchscreen or closer to the piece we are working on. It's very handy to be able to operate it from two different locations. This will allow us to keep doing that.

Too bad you can't just bypass the computer part of your current setup and use the screen with a new NUC driving it.

I would suggest the following: if using a laptop get a cordless keyboard and mouse, probably Logitech as it will be easier to type and a mouse is easier to use with graphics programs. Buy a 30 to 40 inch flat screen at Walmart or Amazon as it is way better on the eyes than the small laptop screen. Look at what sort of files are saved I.E. the size and type and are they used more than once then I would suggest a couple 8 to 10 terra byte external hard drives in a housing to protect the data and keep you from having to get more storage later. For example a 30 minute HD vintage race in my 914/6 takes up about 20MB or so and you also want to have a place to do backups since that is smart thinking.

If you do any online file downloading then you want the safest and fastest router and have ALL your computer stuff behind the firewall even if you use COX or AT&T or ??? as you do not want to trust their router/firewall alone as your information is important.

As an example, late last year I had to build a new computer and for all the pieces it cost me about $1850 including the Vizio 50 flat screen I was able to snag at Walmart for $200 as they were changing their models of TV systems. It uses the HDMI connections for 4K display and I bought 4 new 10TB hard drives for my digitized racing movies. The housing I bought from Amazon has a built in cooling fan and hooks up by USB3.

One of the things I have found since getting our 1st home computer is that the power, graphics and storage have increased exponentially since I bought one in 1979.

Thanks everyone. This is our current setup. We are used to it and like it very much and want to duplicate it. Scott's solution looks like exactly what we need.



We can sit on the stool and use the touchscreen for setups. Then the wireless keyboard & mouse let us operate the control computer from closer to where we are working. The quilt frame is 12 feet long so over the course of the day it saves steps. We do not connect the control computer to the internet. We have a laptop that we use for internet connectivity whenever we need it - usually for training videos.
