I guess it depends on where you live, but when I found a gun the deputy picking it up asked if I wanted it if it came back not stolen and unclaimed and clean after a few months... Considering it was a POS plastic S&W and in multiple pieces, I declined...

We know the gun was not there the night before for sure. My guys leaned the three pieces of plywood against the fence along with some wires and a bunch of 2x4s in the same area to get ready for the pour next morning. When they pulled out the materials the next morning, there it was an AR. None of them wanted to touch it but called me immediately and sent me pics of it as I was driving down. I called the cops immediately. We both showed up about 10 min later.
I saw the gun, it was pretty clean with a couple of scratches on it. Looks like it was used or in car terms, a driver. |

I wonder how many Trigger pins it had. Two or three pins.
If it has three things get super spicy

AR's have a trigger pin and a hammer pin. The third pin is located above and forward of the safety. This third pin is the auto sear pin. An M-16 (military full auto has this pin). The standard AR-15 lacks this item.

If the guy comes back and asks you questions, I'd deny and say the crew foreman called the PD.
I had an elderly neighbor in Metro DC who's thirtysomething son lived with her. One time he decided to park his 18 wheeler tractor on our street for several days. Someone (wink wink) called the PD after a few days since it was against the city code. He approached me a few weeks later and asked if I had called the PD. Nope, I did not, I said. Well it sucks, he said, I got a $400 ticket. Ouch, that really does suck I said. If he had gotten away with it, we would have had the entire 18 wheeler on the street eventually. Same for your situation. If you didn't call the PD, next thing he would have been hiding his C-4 on your property.

I wonder if the cops will keep you informed of their investigation. Is the gun registered to the neighbor you think hid it on your property? Did they talk to him?

I used to watch those public storage auction shows. As I recall, they explained that any found guns were seized by the ATF as there was no way to legally transfer them.

Depending on the state, and most of them allow private party transfers between residents of the same state, ATF would have nothing to say about it. I can see how the storage facility owner may not want to know what's in there or get involved. But if I buy an abandoned storage unit at auction in AZ where I live, and I find guns in the unit - they are then my guns. Anything they were involved in prior to coming into my possession isn't my problem. If it's an NFA item, then I have to jump through some hoops to legally keep them. But I'm under no obligation to even attempt to ascertain something is not stolen, especially if I'm not reselling it.

Happy to amuse you. If it was purchased in CA (not sure what time frame), it's automatically registered. Or, maybe it was registered to the person it was stolen from, or? I'm sure the police are investigating- just wondering what info they might share.
