What tracks have you run on?
Here's something that just popped into my head, what race tracks have you run on? Myself, Watkins Glen, Lime Rock and Bristol Motor Speedway, all with Porsche 911's. In my case, not racing but club events or training. Bristol was something a club I was in got onto because one of us was closely related to a retired NASCAR star. Fun days.

Hallett in Oklahoma many times.
Texas World in Texas, but it is gone now. Charlotte Super Speedway NC Robeling Road in GA Laguna Secca in CA Indianapolis race track. This one is a bit a cheat, as we were just following the leader and never got above 90 on one long straight. The yard of bricks was cool. That place is huge. Eagles Canyon in TX. This is my favorite so far. Super smooth, and the turn into the canyon is downhill, off camber, into another sharp uphill. It is very tricky in my old 85 911 with no traction control. If I nail the apex it is fun, if I miss the apex I end up looking at the track out of the side window. All in my 911. Driven there , and driven home. No trailers involved. ![]()

Mid-Ohio and Putnam in the 911, several times each.
I got to do 4 laps around Las Vegas speedway in an Indy car outfitted for one of those "driving experience" deals. They invited the media to drive around in the cars - paced of course - so we would talk it up. I only got to go up to 144 mph, but that was enough. The track is deceptively rough and it was a a very windy day. The car jumped sideways a foot or two every time it hit a bump and the wind blew it around something awful.

I've run several tracks in the West mostly in karts. But I did drive a wrecker at Talladega on a rainy Sunday along with every safety vehicle available to dry the track. After an hour of making laps and using 2 tanks of diesel it started raining again. They ran the race on Monday in '92.
It takes a min of 70 MPH to hold a 1 ton truck up near the wall. The roll backs were dog tracking with the bed angled just a wee bit towards the apron. The regular ambulances, PU safety trucks and my hook drove straight. The track manager radioed each vehicle to tell the driver what line to run. I was sorta delighted when he said, "Up near the outside wall." Dropping off T2 onto the back straight was something that you wouldn't know about until you did it. It's pretty sudden and easy to hit the wall as you lose the banking. Of course I was on 8 ply truck tires in the wet. Monday was fun too as 16 cars piled up going into T3. We had 8 wreckers so everyone got 2 hook ups. They didn't red flag it either and we were on the apron going clockwise to get to the 2nd car while the pack whizzed by up on the banking. I was a passenger and hook man during the race, IDT we were supposed to be going in the opposite direction. Never seen that since. Kyle Petty broke his femur and he was screaming in pain. We hooked Mark Martin first and I don't remember who we got next but the MM car could be fixed so he got priority. The 2nd one was a total. I got 5 stiches in my hand at the infield care center because I really didn't know just how mangled and sharp a wrecked stock car would be when I reached in to loop a strap around the front frame behind what WAS the radiator. Cut right through my gloves like a razor. The race cars were doing 47 second laps under green. I was over 2 minutes. |

G'day!

With the PCA: Roebling, Sebring, *Moroso.
NSX: Sebring. All while driving my '81 911 SC. * The weekend I was at Moroso, my older brother was also there running his dragster ====== I gave up the track stuff a while back - the effort and money didn't give me the returns in excitement and fun as much any more. It was a great experience to have though and will always be grateful for it!

Three "big tracks", either former F1 tracks, or designed by an F1 track designer
Le Circuit Mont Tremblant Mosport Calabogie Motorsports Park and three "others" Shannonville Motorsports Park Driver Development Track at Mosport Toronto Motorsports Park I also drove the "track" at the Schlumpf Museum in France . . . but it's pretty shot. I've done "wheel to wheel" at Calabogie and Shannonville, and will be doing a race at Mosport this May. The list of tracks I'd love to drive is almost endless, but two stick out -- VIR, and Anglesy in Wales. |
