I just did a track day in one of my Porsches and was only seeing 115-125 at the end of the straights at Pacific Raceways!

In the local newspaper article here, he tells the cop he hit 183.

I won't say that I've hit 150 twice in my life where no one else was around.

Rather than video games, I think we should blame it on youtube, facebook reels, and tiktok. Videos of others doing that sort of thing are probably a lot more motivating than video games.

All of the videos of car chases or stupid stunts and the associated 15 mins of fame is probably far more motivating to modern numbskulls than video games.

Gotta say, if you're going to try to hit speeds like that, I-5 near 217 at 12:20 AM would be a pretty good place to do it. Wide open, great visibility and a long downhill run whether heading north or south.

Yes, the kid might be an idiot - kind of synonymous with being 19 - and might need some time in jail to think about it, but the truth is that what he did, relatively speaking, is probably no worse than others here have done at some point in their past.

If you're in your 60s or 70s, did you ever hammer the throttle on your Roadrunner (or Mustang, GTO, 442 etc ...) until you hit 115-120? On a (presumably) empty stretch of freeway, what's safer, a worse than stock (which your muscle car at the time probably was) 1968 Roadrunner at 120mph or a 2016 M3 at 176?

To be clear, this kid needs to pay an appropriate price for his recklessness but (again, relatively speaking) I'm not ready to brand him as being any worse than kids from earlier eras.

Yep. I tested the odometer limits on my car as a teen (late at night on a deserted, straight road) ...it just would not go that fast. Never as an adult except on the autobahn (when stationed in Europe).

Imagine how the police must have been driving to box him in.

Man has been drawn to speed since we figured out how to make a wheel; can't blame video games. On a particular road in a country just south of us with "No Molesta" signs everywhere, I've had my car pegged at 160 a time or two...it's exhilarating.

That's kind of my thinking, too. I'm sure back in 1912, some rich, brave 19 year old took his Stutz Bearcat to 80 mph on a public road and caused a new sensation.

hitting 5800rpm (out of 6200) in 5th with the targa top off is LOUD.

150 in the boxster is pretty uneventful by comparison.

Lol, I'm 55. I got my first ticket a couple of months after turning 16 while driving my 69 GTO. I was on the I-205 about midnight heading back home to Gladstone. I had spent the night on 82nd cruising and my dumbass thought the headlights of the car behind me "wanted some" so I just kept speeding up, going faster and faster. Got up to about 110-115 and found out that those were the headlights of a state trooper car when he lit me up....was so nervous when i got pulled over, my car almost rolled back (its a stick and was in neutral)into the troopers car....gawd I was stupid....Sometimes I'm amazed me and the car are still around today.

I've taken most of my cars to what I thought was a safe limit. Most cars seem to get a little light at speed and some kind of anomaly is going to send you south. Sudden wind direction change from a little dust devil, tire failure (did he have the highest speed rated tires? Probably), animals and defective road. If you're gonna make a speed run you ought to drive the course slowly once to check things out. I may or may not have done that each time.

For instance, an early 2000's Chevy PU is a bit of a handful at 100 MPH even lowered. You don't have to ask me how I know. I did this on a lonely road outside of Willow Springs. That was according to the speedo, so I really don't know the exact speed when I decided if there was anything left, I didn't need it. In P-cars I generally got that feeling at about 130, again according to the instruments. The Boxster has 2 speedos, analog and digital. I assume many later 911's do too. The stated high speed capability is somewhat higher but I'll trust me before I trust testing data done under controls.

Nowadays it would be stone foolish to drive a modern car over 80. Too much data tracking on board.
