Daily Driver Help Needed (Jetta)
My daily driver - 96 Jetta with 2.0L engine is not starting-no fuel, no spark from my testing, but it does crank. Any help appreciated, even if pointed to good bb. VWVortex isn't doing it.

disconnect the battery for about 5 minutes......this will reset the computer.......worth a shot.
also does that car have a "rollover" cutout for the fuel? if it does it may need reset, check your owners manual for where the reset button is.

Bell,
I've disconnected the battery to reset ECU already, no luck. Rollover detection is not an option on the vehicle. It does seem like the imobilizer function though with no fuel and no spark. Searching for bad wiring at the moment.

Too many miles driven daily, plus the midwest weather kind of keeps me from using the '86 as the daily driver. Thanks for the help though.

"no fuel, no spark . . ."
Sounds like an ingnition side problem. (I'm fairly certain that the fuel pump will not run unless the hall sensor (distributor) gives x-number of pusles per second.)

The Hall Sensor is the next item to check. You're right, it is part of the distributor assembly on this vehicle.

I have had the wiring to the hall sensor fail on one of these. I vaguely remember it being a broken wire (at the solder joint) under the hall sensor.
Anyway, the quick check is to see if voltage is getting to the sensor. . ..something like ~3V.

Island,
I'm at work and don't remember if this is a three wire device or not. If so, isn't it the middle terminal that provides the output? I will do some testing tonight when I get home.

Well I'll preface things by saying I'm going off a decade old brain-cells on this.
Anyway, I'll sugest you test the input. . . being that the voltage output, from the hall effect is minimal (measuring induced electron drift) The Bentley shop manual should tell you which pins should be tested for voltage. Or, just simply remove the dist' plate that carries the hall sensor, and look at the bottom side for broken wires.

Finally got some time to debug, and to make nostatic happy I've been driving the 86 daily.
Brought home the diagnostic tool from work, fault code P1340 which is cam / crank sensor sequence problem of some sort. Cam sensor (Hall Sensor) signal looks good on scope. With the sensor disconnected, results in the same fault code. Must be wiring problem between sensor and ECU. More searching tomorrow, another excuse to drive the 86.
