Why it's now legal
For archery hunters to carry pistols.

I don't know that I'd call those warning shots. I think he just missed. Surprised how cool the cat was even after the shots fired. I'd be ****tin Twinkies!

Saw that quite some time ago. Darwin almost claimed another one for caring more about a video that his safety. If the dummy had dropped his phone and used both hands he would have had better aim.

Breathing as hard as he was, two hands may not have helped...but yes, I chuckled a bit at "warning shots"..

Brings back memories. I had one get closer than that when I was out during a muzzle loading deer season. We were allowed to carry black powder sidearms, either single shot pistols or cap and ball revolvers. I had neither. The only thing I had was my .50 caliber flintlock round ball rifle. I soon purchased a Ruger Old Army cap and ball revolver.
Interestingly, this one (there have been several others) did not have his ears back, and did not appear aggressive in any way. I think he was just curious. I just started talking to him in a really calm, soothing voice. I remember his ears going up and his head twisting back and forth like a curious dog. This went on for about ten minutes, with this thing less than 20 feet away. I finally started telling him jokes. I think that's what drove him away.

Either your timing is off or, you just need better jokes.

No one is more of an animal lover tree hugger than me but if that big kitty was coming at me with ears back (,I'm a former house cat owner.) I would have popped a few warning shots when I first saw the kitty.
Fun fact like to hike the Central Calif coast. They have mountain lion warnings up. I'd see those and think "pfft... I have been camping and hiking around here for decades and never seen no lions!" One day I see a big turd by the aide of the trail up always and I think "how sick, you couldn't go off the trail at least to drop your load?" Get closer and it is a big hairy cat turd Decided it was a good day to return to Motto Bay for A beer or three.

Reminds of a trip dove hunting with my dad and some of his friends. None of them were native English speakers. His friend’s shotgun developed a double firing issue but that didn’t stop the friend from finishing the day. Instead we would hear, “bang-bang…sonnama*****!” Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

It always made me nervous standing behind some kid with a 9mm pistol in a shoulder holster that pointed the barrel directly at the guy behind in the chow line. If I pointed my boom stick directly at you there would be a problem but for some reason the horizontal shoulder holster was not seen as an issue for muzzle discipline. That's some good logic.

Muzzles should never, even for an instant, be pointed at something we do not want to destroy. You guys all know that.
I do not have Jeff's courage. I would have pointed with two hands and squeezed.

An additional fun fact regarding that particular encounter was that "later that same day"... I was presented with a shot at a pretty good buck. The rifle didn't go off. It suffered that proverbial "flash in the pan". The vent hole into the barrel was plugged. While somewhat disappointing when pointing it at that buck, I suspect it would have been a good deal more so earlier that day.

I am still struggling to understand why a normal sidearm would be verboten. I carry them all the time in the backwoods.

Fish and game laws, especially around restricted-equipment hunting seasons can get pretty weird and inconsistent.

Get off my lawn!

My brother is an avid bow and arrow hunter. He has harvested a lot deer. He was out wild boar hunting and at the time, any modern firearm was illegal when bow hunting. He had a perfect shot at a boar, and it "squealed like a pig" and ran right at him.
He had brought his replica cap and ball 50 caliber pistol and he pulled it as the boar got closer. He said he knew he could not miss, so he had to wait until it was close, very close. It dropped dead just before he shot it in the head. The arrow had hit in a perfect spot, but the boar was just big enough to live a few seconds longer than ideal. So he killed it twice! After that, he started carrying a modern pistol.

I suppose some bow "hunters" might carry a bow for show, and just kill stuff with a modern pistol and lie about being attacked. What about bear spray? Can this be carried during bow season? I'd rather have my .45 LC but bear spray would at least give someone a chance. With nothing but a knife, the chances of surviving a cougar attack are not good. Then again, cougars generally do not hunt humans. Boars are another story, according to what I have read.
I notice that animal attacks on humans are actually pretty rare, but I just don't go out there without something effective. In case....

Dunno about Washington laws...or Oregon either, now that I haven't hunted for years. Back when I did hunt I always bought a tag to hunt Cougar. Why? Cougars were legal to hunt year round..no specific season. So, with a hunting license and a cougar tag, always a legal reason to carry a rifle in the woods. Of course, without dogs, pretty difficult to spot a cougar...they were rarely seen...had a fear of man back then when dog hunting cougar and bear was legal.

Up here in Washington it used to be illegal to carry any sort of a modern firearm during weapons restricted seasons, i.e. archery and muzzle loader. We were allowed to carry either a muzzle loading pistol or a cap and ball revolver during muzzle loader seasons, just no cartridge guns. Archers were not allowed to carry any sort of a firearm. Game department rules, not state law.
Those rules were in conflict with state law and the 2nd Amendment. Hunters did not win the right to have a sidearm during these special seasons over any concerns regarding animal attack or anything at all like that. It was decided (rightly so) that we do not forfeit any of our rights just because we are participating in an activity regulated by some appointed bureaucrats making up their own contrived rules. This was the same basic argument that forced the parks service to relent on their rules banning firearms in national parks. They simply do not have the authority to demand we give up our rights just because we find ourselves in a national park.

Psycho. What the heck was it thinking? Are you food?
When i was watching I was thinking the jump scare was that the other two were lying in wait just behind him, like those velociraptors used to do. I think I read that no one that weighs more than 135 have ever been killed by a cougar. I'd have thought it would make short work of a chimp but body mass counts for something and you can actually fight them off. Not sure if everyone filled out the response form, and if thats been tested everywhere though. I also read that olympic park is the only place that cougar will take elk. Really glad cougar wasn't hurt, hopefully he scores a big meal soon. Oooh: friend had a cool cougar experience. He was biking down a logging road, dog by his side. Out Of Nowhere a cougar appears just loping along in slow motion. Moves ahead and sticks its nose into running dogs ass, then leaps up into the woods off the road and as gone. Said maybe that took 2 seconds. Dog never knew the cougar was there. Guy says he thinks the cougar didn't attack because... he'd given his dog a flea bath that very morning and dog didn't smell like food. Last edited by zakthor; 06-27-2023 at 05:52 PM.. |
