Sunglasses

What do we like in sunglasses? Prescription or non-prescription. What is stylin’, cool, functional? Anyone have lots of ‘em, even a collection? Vintage shades? Special purposes? Sports-specific?

I’m looking at getting some and trying to find inspiration!

Polarized fishing glasses from WalMart. They're cheap and functional. You can say we have a collection -- over the years we've lost, bought replacements, and found the old ones so many times we probably have 20 for the two of us.

High quality glasses are great. I had some Porsche Design glasses that were a gift with glass lenses, anti-reflective coating, etc.... They were really fantastic to look through. It was like looking through nothing. The anti-reflective coating was really nice, and the clarity was spectacular.

Now I wear glasses, primarily for close work. I went ahead and got prescription sunglasses, and it's great to be able to look at my phone, read anything, whatever even in the sun. And I get the same sort of anti-reflective coating on my sunglasses.

For many, many years, I wore cheap sunglasses. I made ZZ Top proud. THen I started wearing polarized glasses. I've stopped wearing polarized glasses. All the polarization really does for you these days is allow you to see through reflective car windows. But it also makes electronic screens more of a pain if they aren't oriented correctly.

I don't know the name, but my prescription glasses turn dark in the sun. It's nice not to have two pair of glasses.

Photogray or Transitions, they are called. I love them.

I’ve had em last 3 pairs. Hate em. Never again. Go outside for one second and take forever to return to normal when I go back in. Not nearly dark enough in sun and don’t work (get dark) in the car when I need em most

As I understand it, the older Photogray glass lenses reacted to light.
The newer Transitions on plastic lenses react to UV, which is partially blocked by auto glass.
That's why the newer lenses will not get as dark in a car as if outside in direct sunlight.

I really like my Transitions, but also keep a pair of "real" prescription sunglasses in the car for when driving directly towards the sun.

What happens when you rotate the screen 90 degrees? I had the same issue with a vehicle nav. screen 20 years ago. Tilted my head to my shoulder and could see everything fine.

I wear love my no-line progressive prescription polarized sunglasses. Especially when driving shortly before sunset.

They were crazy money, but they last for 15 years or more. My older set of them is my mowing the yard glasses and the newer ones are for driving.

I have one set of Rx sunglasses, with all old prescription. A couple pairs of non-Rx sunglasses which aren’t often used, as I seldom wear contacts.

At the optometrist I found a vintage pair of Porsche Design frames from the 90’s, in good condition. They are smaller than the typical giant bug-eye Carreras - more like Ray-Ban aviators but a bit smaller yet. I’ve never seen this particular style.

My optometrist talked with the local Zeiss folks and they can make a set of prescription sunglass lenses with the rear edges milled to leave a front flange that will fit in the frames, just like the original plastic lenses. I’m thinking about having that done. If it works, I could have other lenses made and milled, so I can swap between Rx sunglasses, Rx non-sunglasses, and later any special-purpose lenses I want. It’d be a challenge for them but my optometrist enjoys doing weird stuff. She really liked making the shooting glasses earlier.

These would be expensive but pretty unique.

Same here. Have to take them off to see my phone. I’m outside a lot and always wear sunglasses (cheap polarized from Amazon). Got the raccoon look with white circles around my eyes. My good buddy has a melanoma on the back of his eyeball…gave me extra incentive to wear them…especially fishing and golfing.

Just remember. As the price paid for sunglasses goes up, so does the likelihood they will fall out of your shirt pocket and land on rough concrete creating a scratch directly in front of your eyes. Much like the likelihood of simply losing them.

I asked about them once when I was getting glades. I was told that they work based on UV light and car windows block UV so they don't work in a car. But I think I was told that there is a type that does work in a car, but they are more expensive or something.
