Top Fuel Technology
Found a YouTube channel that does a great job of explaining it all. Here is an example:

Top fuel is just a different universe. 7,000+ HP and they only go 1/4 mile at most if not a 1/8 mile.
The specifications just boggle the mind that they can't add any more supercharger compression as the air is approaching the point it would compress into a liquid with more pressure.

These things actually do achieve darn near "hydraulic lock" at TDC on the compression stroke. While static compression is very low (I believe around 6.5:1), the supercharger and fuel delivery make up for that. The stoichiometric ratio for the fuel mix they run (90% nitromethane, 10% methanol) is around 2.1:1, so even before it gets fed into the cylinders at 4.5 bar (65 psi) it's darn near liquid rather than vapor.

Wow! When I was a helper for Ed Wills (who was my boss & company owner) on his drag boat & funny car in the mid 60s, we were blown away at claims the Crysler hemis were putting out 1,800 to maybe 2,000 hp. How times have changed.

I’m going to show this to my dad next time I visit him (already saw him today).
He’s one of the pioneers of Drag Racing… that’s him in the right. He would have been about 18 then. ![]()

Top fuel is an event every gearhead should experience in person at least once. There is nothing else like it on the planet and the physical assault when the cars launch and drive by cannot be imagined or communicated through media. At all.
So incredible. |

So true. Nothing like the feel of the earth shaking under your feet and the feeling in your chest when a fuel car launches.

Top Fuel Dragsters - Yep there's nothing else like it.
When I was a kid we'd sit in the stands and just soak it all up. Always a great atmosphere with good solid people. I haven't been in a long time but I should really get back to it at some point. Quote:
