I need some way to measure the wifi signal in certain areas of the house.
I'm torn between the big two Nest and Ring, but I'm open to any other systems anyone can recommend and any suggestions as to the best affordable set-up for 4 outdoor cameras.
I looked at the WiFi cameras and the distance to the cameras, and power supply to the camera was the issue. I went with a Cat 5A POE (power over Ethernet) setup. They run flawlessly for the last 7 or 8 years. 24/7 recording everything to my DVR. I have the last two weeks of recordings, and then it gets overwritten.

The wireless systems work, but you are feeding it batteries forever.

I did not want to run any wires that might limit my flexibility (I move them around). The Blink units have a small transmitter that must be within range of wifi and the cameras must be in rage of the transmitter. That gives a bit of extra range if placed properly. You can put multiple cameras on each transmitter or one. I have mine set up with a group on outside, one on inside, or upstairs, downstairs, garage, etc... depending on home (so I can turn the motion sensors off in some areas and not others. The wireless cameras use 2 AA lithium cells (I use energizer) that last over 2 years for me. I generally use the wired ones where I can because they are much cheaper to buy initially. They only come on when triggered by motion or when I intentionally trigger them from my Iphone.

We had an interesting night. Around 2:30 our dog (inside) started barking, which is very rare. I immediately grabbed a gun, which has since been lost in the San Antonio river. Did a look around and found nothing.

I ended up sleeping on the couch thereafter. At 5am, dog started again. This time there was a car parked right in front on my house. It sat there a minute or two before driving off.

Turns out the 5am was Amazon making the early delivery. If it weren't for the earlier incident I wouldn't have notice and most likely neither would the dog.

I didn't have cameras up until a year ago when something very creepy happened. I have my 993 and early 911 in my garage, and when the door is open the cars are visible to anyone driving by. One day a few minutes after I left for work, two guys show up at my front door. Only the nanny is home with my young kids. One guy confidently tells her that I sold my Porsche to him and I told him to come by and pick it up and can she give him the keys. Nanny is a smart woman and instantly realized this was trouble and closed the door in his face and locked it. Situation could have gone wrong in many different ways. I installed cameras after that. These guys had been casing my house and watched me leave. This is in a boring, ordinary LA neighborhood.

Another tool to use against these people is a "Driveway Chime". You set it up in your garage and it goes ♪♪ Ding Dong ♪♪ inside the house - not the garage. It gives you time to put your boots on and have a polite word with whoever is robbing your garage.

It does work but I won't give the details as I got lamed last time I talked about this.

I'm sort of in the same situation.

I'm looking at only a handful of brands; Ring Arlo, and Eufy. Most... seem to want to be connected to Wifi and store to a SD card.

Come in, Baz. Thanks a lot, for squeezing the current topics off of Page 1 with your very funny joke. Are you drunk right now?

I had DLink for a while. Spent a lot of $$$ on various accessories, cameras, alarms, internet controlled outlets/timers, water detectors, etc. . . then the company announces:

END OF SERVICE

Effectively bricking all my hardware.

Not happy.

I’ve been replacing the cameras with Rings. The beauty is for a small fee they will record activity. Not all my cameras are subscribed to this service, just front doors and back doors.

Pretty decent night time vision.

Sample daytime screenshot

. . . oh and setup was EASY

Ring and Blink seem to be the two major names I hear.

I have six Blink cameras, three outside, two inside and one in the garage. So far so good*

* Except for the stupid wasp hanging around the one at the front door. I have lots of close-ups of him crawling on the camera.😂

My neighbor has a driveway chime. Not sure of the brand but it has a remote inside the house to arm it on and off. Its actually setup to trigger just behind the cars parked in the driveway and across the walkway and lawn. My guess it has multiple detectors.

It has a slot for a memory card in which you can store tracks and sound bytes. It has a remote speaker connection that is connected to a couple of outdoor rock speakers in the planters.

It started out for Halloween to trigger sound effects but neighbor has taken it to another level.

The exterior alert plays gunshots, shotgun racking, dogs growling, alarm sounds and recordings of your own choosing. The volume can be set from subtle to rediculous.

Other neighbor across the street is Highway Patrol and thinks its the greatest thing as a deterant.

Not worried about my ring, would never use Alexa as you are the commodity. I can jam any signal around me (if I needed to) so not worried.
