every "big burn" has a story, last year it was it covid, this year its rain. id take rain over having covid in a desert, but thats just me.

i figured out burns when i realized that there is no way to "win" a burn. there is no goal. there is no purpose. it exists. thats it. thats the whole thing.

so lots of people establish all sorts of internal metrics, or external metrics for burns, and then bemoan that somehow the burn didnt hit their metrics ... i think those people are kinda missing the point.

so you have the "it was a real burn 10 years ago) ... of course this has been said since they burned a man on the beach and the cops werent too happy about it 30 years ago. its like the "SNL was good 10 years ago" phenomena, or the "people dont want to work anymore" thing.

you have the "its not environmental" which is like ... no one claimed it ever would be. its about burning and consuming art ... thats not particularly ecologically focused.

you have the "its just rich white people doing rich white people things" and that is and always has been 100% true. its just not only that.

a new one im seeing from the left is "burning man is privileged, its not egalitarian as it purports to be" and of course this is correct too. not everyone can afford to go, have the vacation needed, etc etc.



burning is a bit of a rorschach test. you see what you want to see. and you do what you want to do. and you take from it what you put into it.

i do recommend everyone try it though.

I think the best way to go through life, other than actively making the lives of people around you better (try it, it's addictive), is to do your best against the principles you subscribe to. So for 352 days out of the year, if being green is your thing, practice it, preach it. But if you want to go to Burning Man or visit your grandmother in another state or take a vacation in Germany or whatever the **** you want to do for those 13 other days that doesn't align perfectly with your vision for life, do it.

Same with everything really. Do your best to be a good person, that's all.

the traffic jam exists for a reason, you trying to put yourself in front of everyone else, thats pretty messed up.

if thats what you want it to be, it can absolutely be that.

the mistake is in thinking that any one burning man experience is representative of all burning man experiences. there are 70 thousand people, all having 70 thousand different experiences. it is foolish to think that a single sentence can describe all of them.

Yep, I try to do something nice unconditionally for someone each day and I don't do it to bring attention to myself.

It just seemed "funny" to me that all of these liberal type of artsy people, who are usually the ones who want to "save the earth", don't have a problem with their polluting traffic jam stretching for miles across the desert but will shun and judge their neighbor for driving their big SUV or spray paint on a yacht because they see those things as a threat to the environment!!! Smells hypocritical to me, just sayin.

I have never understood getting bent over what other people do. Makes no sense to me. Go outside and be happy.

can't police 70k people. burners wouldnt even want to try. there are bound to be a few non-burners in the crowd. rich or not, doesnt really matter.

there was a big discourse about how people were not getting the experience they wanted from the burn because of the rain. and again, thats missing the point. you dont get the burn you wanted, thats kinda burn 101. burning is an unsafe space, even at the best of times, profoundly uncomfortable. there being rain, doesnt change that.

you can't have a profoundly transformative experience on your own couch. you have to go out and do uncomfortable things, things you've never done before, things that make you uncomfortable, unsafe, etc if you want to have a profound experience. it doesnt just show up on your doorstep and you unbox it.

burning man isnt a music festival, a survivalist convention, an eco convention ... its a burn. its out of control, thats the point.

limited feedback from the folks i know who went was that it was a great time, as always. im sure that i will hear more at the next regional, in 2 weeks.
