Finally got him

https://news.yahoo.com/gma/escaped-murderer-danelo-cavalcante-captured-123700330.html

A fugitive who escaped from a Pennsylvania prison just days after being sentenced to life without parole in the fatal stabbing of his ex-girlfriend was captured early Wednesday, Pennsylvania State Police said.

Details on the capture have not yet been revealed. Police have scheduled a press conference for 9:30 a.m.

The end of the 14-day manhunt for 34-year-old Danelo Cavalcante came as a relief to residents of Pocopson Township, Pennsylvania, who had been advised by officials to stay alert. A combination of tactical teams from Pennsylvania State Police, FBI and Border Patrol brought Cavalcante into custody, according to a law enforcement source.

That's a relief. Been chatting with a old friend that had helicopters and searchers around her house the last couple of days.

Cavalcante tried to flee by crawling through thick underbrush with a rifle, but a police dog was released and bit him, Bivens said. He was taken into custody shortly after 8 a.m.
That K9 officer deserves a few treats!

It was a wild ride around here. The prison he was in is nestled in a pretty heavily wooded area. We had police helicopters all around for the better part of a week and a heavy police presence. I'm still amazed he dodged their initial perimeter around Longwood and was able to basically steal a truck 5 miles north, but that area is so heavily wooded, it's probably impossible to guard every possible outlet.

Surprised he was able to hide out for so long. All the high tech stuff these days (drones, thermal imaging, etc., ect) with 400 people looking for him.

They need to put ankle monitors on every inmate in that prison.
Or a ball and chain.

FWIW the institution from which he escaped is being referred to as a "jail" not a "prison". So, if the jail has weaknesses, then for sure monitors would be helpful. Did you see how he escaped? That took some serious strength and would not have occurred to me as an escape route.

Yes how he escaped was pretty incredible and they said a previous inmate had escaped from that jail in the same manner, same spot. Uh, maybe they need to put some kind of overhanging ledge type of razor wire on the edges of the roof to possibly prevent this from happening ever again.
If this wasn't a maximum security prison, why was the perp there? Was he being housed there temporarily until he could be moved to a more secure facility?

Many years ago a friend of mine was a K-9 officer and kept his dog at home. He left to do some errands and some local low life broke in through a window and his wife was home alone with the dog. The dog bit the intruder over 100 times before he got home to call the dog off. She said the man was screaming the entire time. She told him don't break into houses and you won't get bit. He was a good doggy!

He was paid to guard him but he was not doing his job. Likely millions of dollars spent to capture the criminal. All because the guard did not do his job.

Pretty hard to shoot him once they deployed the dog, without a high probability of hitting the dog instead. It's sort of *one or the other.*

Also interesting that with everyone in the area on high alert, the guy manages to walk into an open garage and steal a rifle and ammo with the armed homeowner shooting at him in the garage with a pistol. Never hit him once. The guy might have been the world's worst shot but it really shows the limits of carrying a gun in real world, high stress situations. The guy probably put bullet holes in his car, the hull of his boat and in his favorite pair of waders hanging on the wall.

Based on that, I'm voting ball and chain. We don't need to funnel more tax payer cash into privatized incarceration.

Yes, glad that the guy was caught. It's a shame he wasn't shot. At least he was chewed on a bit.

That's legit BUT years ago I heard it's actually more expensive to execute someone in the US than incarcerate them for life.

Eg expensive judges, lawyers, barristers, court members, court time, multiple trials and hearings over a decade or so.

Could this be true?
