The Lunacy of “proper identification” conundrum.

I am starting this thread just to see if anyone else has experienced the insanity of being denied due to what businesses consider to be inadequate identification. Here in CA, we have real ID and being mandated to go to this form of ID, resulted in effectively is a name change for me after 52 years. That’s another story for another time.

In college, I got my commercial driver’s license due to a job driving the student shuttle bus. Hadn’t used it since but I’ve always maintain the commercial rating, just because. All I had to do is get a DOT physical every two years. This will play into the thread in a little bit.

In July, my licensed was set to expire on my birthdate. I go into DMV, renew my license, eye exam, online paperwork, blah, blah, blah… with the exception of my being able to get the DOT physical since the local examiner is booked out for weeks and my appointment was finally last week. Easy peezy, 60 day extension for the medical, DMV paperwork in hand so all good………. Not!

Since then, I was flagged by DOJ and denied a purchase of a firearm(reason:expired DL/real ID). Per the manager who I know at our local DMV, I’m valid except for driving a commercial vehicle for hire since they were waiting for a new commercial medical, then today at my credit union, with my old DL and DMV paperwork, I was denied access to my accounts and locked out to cash a small check. Reason: expired DL and it’s not a valid form of identification, even though the old one has all of the required info, my picture, physical identifiers, address, absolutely everything with the exception of the little date at the bottom, for that, I provided the DMV paperwork showing it’s been renewed and I’m just waiting for the new plastic card in the mail. Nope, not good enough… was told there is no way to determine that was mine since DMV does not provide a “ photo receipt” anymore, they would not even accept my CA state issued government ID card nor the federal passport iD card because my physical address was not listed on either. So here I wait for the new little plastic card to arrive……

Am I missing something and has anyone else experienced the sheer stupidity of this level?

Contrast: Small town Nova Scotia. I took my 9 year old grand daughter into the bank to open a savings account. Her photo ID was out of date so Janice, who has known me for most of her life, just said,"Expiry date: unknown." And filled out the screen. Problem? What problem?

Wow, total fluster cuck!

1 OK, if your DL shows as expired, then I'm not surprised that you can't use that.
2 I would think that you absolutely should be able to use a state issued IP and especially a US federal passport. Not letting you use those seems insane.
3 Having the old ID and paperwork for the new ID also seems like it should be adequate.

In Ohio, walk into any BMW with your passport and a utility bill that shows your current address. In and out 15 minutes. We have a reservation system that actually works, you check in on your phone. They tell you the wait time. Just show up on time or a bit before.

When Real ID first came to Florida and I had to get it, I had a notorized copy of my birth cert that was made when my original was issued. Not accepted.

However, I could go to that line over there, and the lady there would print me a new one, for a fee of $20.

The ID she needed? My current DL that I was replacing/renewing and the notarized copy of the birth cert I had that the DL lady wouldn't take.

My Sister-in-Law is a supervisor at the Sacramento DMV HQ. She says the photo receipt was only designed for the examiner and that the DMV paper is proof I can legally drive but “Not” a valid form of ID.

In my wee brain, that just does not make any logical sense. No wonder we are so fud-up. The system is so broken, I don’t see it ever recovering…

Yup. I had this experience only worse with my father earlier this year. What a 5hit show and I ended up getting politicians involved to get it sorted and only then it was sorted after I cc’d the media on a follow up email 3 weeks later.

When my dad turned 80, his (revoked) BC drivers license and health care card expired. Apart from his passport, he had no valid government issued ID. With dementia, it was not a priority for him to get this sorted…

I took him to the local Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (equivalent to the DMV) office to get a new BC ID card since he could no longer get a drivers license. The plan was to then replace his health care card when the BCID card arrived in the mail. 2 weeks later, dad broke his hip and would up hospitalized for 4.5 months. In the mean time, and several months later, a letter arrived from ICBC stating that he needed to return to and ICBC office due to a data discrepancy… obviously this could not happen.

After many visits to ICBC offices and Service BC offices as dads POA and hours spent on the phone with ICBC we we able to determine that the ‘data discrepancy’ was that the clerk at the initial office used dad’s middle initial instead of his full middle name on the ID. Regardless, ICBC dug in their heels and said they couldn’t issue a new ID without him being present in one of their offices. One of the ICBC agents even suggested that since dad was hospitalized, he probably didn’t need ID anymore… what the F?

At this point, I sent an email to dad’s MLA, the minister responsible for ICBC, the new president of ICBC, and the head of ICBC’s fairness department. No reply for 3 weeks until I threatened to go to the media.

Within minutes, the office of dad’s MLA called and said they would raise this with the minister of ICBC.

The next day, I got a cryptic email from the head of ICBC’s fairness department stating that a new BCID card would be mailed out in the next 72 hours.

I have a buddy who does similar with businesses gone wrong. He just guesses the CEO’s email. Gets results.

The "real ID" laws that have requirements for several forms of ID to get a new driver's license is rather silly. I have a passport, and I had to show a lot of ID to get that. One would think a passport is a full "real ID" but I had too bring a utility bill, my birth certificate and my passport to get my driver's license renewed. The bonus as a geezer (over 65) my renewal was free. She asked if I want a 5 or 10 years license and of course I said 10 years. So I am good to go until 2030.

And one problem is that the in Oklahoma, we have a private enterprise system for tags and licenses. Not all of the tag agents want to even mess with the requirement of real ID as there is little money to be made. Most of the tag agents have just one employee and the equipment needed to get it done. In major metropolitan areas like OKC, you have to make an appointment on line, and those slots are like getting tickets from ticket master. We drove 12 miles to a small suburb and got our done with no problems very quickly.

The state assumes after most people have changed over to real ID, and it gets back to just a renewal process it will be easy for all. Real ID licenses are not required, so if you never fly on commercial airlines, go into a Federal building, or on a military base you are just fine without it.

Good catch, that does seem odd.

I had a SSN card from a very, very young age. I didn't know it until later. I did have a photo ID at the age of 7-8, but then it was an unusual situation where it was required to live on a military base in a foreign country.

If you want to get through airport security, you need ID.
She was 3 when we last visited the west coast.
