Are you eclipsing right now?
Yeah, I know it's post in the astronomy thread.
About 25% here now. 30 minutes to max which might be 2/3rds. Those up north get the full whammy. Having some welding gear is helpful for something else. |

Yes, we're eclipsing right now. We got glasses from the local library, which are coming in handy. My wife is using them to take pictures. These are always neat to watch.

Interesting how it makes you feel it's late in the day.

Really messes with the birds. Every morning and evening Canada geese are flying over in groups to 10 to 30. Not today. No birds out. Very quiet in the city.

We've got turkeys, roosters, hens, dogs, coyotes, ducks, etc. all making a racket around here.

I decided to 'risk' my old camera and try to get a shot of it.
Here's what I came up with: My brother sent me shots from his tablet using a pin hole camera technique and a welding mask. They're on my tablet if you'd like me to post them.

I tried the phone thing with the lens of a welding helmet. I didn't take the lens out of the helmet and place it in front of the camera lens touching the rim. I think that's the ticket. So no pics, but you guys got some so that's good enough.
Nice job. |

Location: Placerville, CA.... You know, the only place on Highway 50 between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe the you find signal lights. Above the fog most of the time and I can see the stars of the Milky Way 8 out of 10 nights. Kinda cool.....

Tried the same thing, was a no go. Couldn’t even pick up a partial.

I just put a kit lens on my Sony A7ii at 70mm, set it on 'Manual', dialed in f18 & 1/8000 sec and took the shot. I had googled how to shoot the eclipse and NASA recommended a long focal length lens and 1/1000 sec at f11 or f16. I figured a shorter time would be better at ISO 100. No filters except the UV that is always on the lens for protection from those accidental dog licks of the lens.
