BOMB! It's the world we live in these days

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WKRN) – A parked car outside of a restaurant in Tennessee prompted multiple businesses to evacuate, and a major intersection to close early Tuesday morning.

Murfreesboro police later cleared the scene after discovering that the “suspicious device” on the vehicle was actually a rubber bumper attached to the passenger side of the car with duct tape and wires.

The car’s owner allegedly told police he attached the rubber bumper to his vehicle — connecting the wires to a suction cup attached to the inside door handle — to “prevent dents.”

“We had a massive, massive response to this location to find out it was a man who was trying to prevent his car from being dented,” Larry Flowers, Murfreesboro’s public safety public information officer, said.

Have you guys ever seen the bumper protectors they use in NYC ? They do not look like bombs, so its not really relevant to this post, but parking is such madness there, they have these big rubber things that they drape over the front and rear bumpers to protect them
Remind me to never buy a car from NYC.

I don't understand why the wires are needed and they wrap them in what looks like old towels?

It was my first year of high school in 1969, when we had bomb threats called in almost every week. It would always be in the early afternoon and the students would get sent home for the day.

Finally, after months of this, they started keeping the students on the lawn of the school until the searching was done. (usually for a few hours)

Then the bomb threats quit.

Back in 2007 we spent two days and nights in San Francisco like typical tourists. My 911 was parked in an underground parking garage that was for the hotel guests only, so we walked and took the trolley to look around.

I noticed pretty much 100% of the cars on the streets had bumpers that were mangled, bent and scraped. I had to assume everyone in SF parks by braille. I was extra happy my 911 was safe in a garage next to a pillar.

have seen that as well. giant mud flaps that stretch the middle of the bumper and frequently metal bars. i'd take the scratches and dings over those things.

I would have placed the bumpers about a foot lower.

They are called Bumperbully. $44.95. I have so many tragic stories involving my vehicles when I lived there. Won’t bore you with the stories but yea. It’s a warzone and im glad to be out of there.

IMO That's the work of someone with a warped sense of humor.

----

What I would think looking at this set-up...

1. Improvise explosive or "home made" (the cloth wrap).
2. The wires go to the detonators.

Note the wire going to the lock handle area... I would assume it was setup to detonate when the car was unlocked with the remote.

Based on what can be seen the "massive response" was more than appropriate.

I was taking a short nap in the car between school-work in front of the second night job.
BANG. Lady door dings my car. "It was the hill. I couldn't help it!". She quickly walks inside.
Her car is nicer than mine and I get to practice PDR.
I go back to sleep.
BANG again. She gets in and quickly drives away. SMH.

Back in the 70s a lot of privately owned Taxi in our larger cities were fitted with train rails in place of bumpers.

At some point The Gumbit stepped in and banned it.

That’s about when we started getting bomb threats called into our junior high school. We would all go outside and wait while they check the building, then let us back in. No biggie.

Thank god we live somewhere with a government instead of somewhere like Afghanistan.

First time I saw one I swore it was one of those temporary rubber speed bumps for crowd control. I honestly don't see how one can KEEP a car nice in NY.
