Apple to halt all watch Sales
https://www.wsj.com/tech/apple-to-halt-watch-sales-as-it-prepares-to-comply-with-u-s-import-ban-432a018c?
They didn't pay the royalty for the oxygen sensor in the watches.

Whoops. Those pesky patents. Just pay the royalty, and make the watches cost more.

They considered buying the company, but poached their engineers instead.

I bought Masimo stock for $17 at the IPO years ago. Apple hired their engineers to develop the SPO2 monitoring in the newer watches. Masimo is introducing their own watch in 2024 that will be used more in patient monitoring than hipster wearing.
I know Joe Kiani the CEO pretty well and he developed the technology when he was at MIT. It's his "baby" and he doesn't want to sell it. Apple is hoping for a Presidential veto on the trade restriction that goes into effect 12/24. Only problem is I was invited to a reception and fundraiser for said President held at Joe's home but politely declined. We'll see who has "the juice", Masimo or Apple. There's a bit more but don't want to PARF up your thread Red.

Craig, if you can do it in a strictly factual manner, we should be OK. If it gets too PARFY, it can always be moved.

I am sitting on the edge of my chair...I love this stuff.
If it gets parf-like, let me know. We had some off-shore companies roll in on two of our engineers that helped develop the control laws for our ducted fan UAS...they didn't bite due to our insistence on squaring away our IP.

Patents are a funny thing these days. I'm an inventor on at least 36 issued patents but I'm wondering if there is value in prosecuting patents anymore.
I was an expert witness in a very complicated IP trial where the decision was handed down last month. I was surprised by the outcome, even though my former employer won... (they knowingly infringed). These decisions should not be political. Politicians should not be able to interfere in the defense of Intellectual Property. File and abandon seems like a better strategy in some cases.

Infantile blindness due to oversaturation of oxygen in preemie babies was common until Masimo came along with their sensor technology. That along with "false alarms" due to patient movement, they were able to drop incidents to almost zero.
They have since developed tech to measure carbon monoxide poisoning and other blood gases and are the tops in their field. They've fought a few medical companies in court regarding this technology. I met Joe Kiani the CEO when I was working on "ER" and he wanted to do some product placement. Consequently I was invited to buy into their IPO as "Friends and Family". It will be interesting to see what develops, I'm thinking a long term licensing agreement for some big bucks will eventually happen sooner rather than later.

I own Massimo stock and one of their non-professional pulse oximeters.
But I also own Apple stock and their laptops. I guess I win either way. |

I knew it was coming so I bought my Wife an Apple watch last week for Christmas. Masimo has been a rollercoaster for me. Bought at $17 and went as high as $300, I'm still way ahead.

Huh, never knew my Ultra could do blood oxygen, just tried it. I do appreciate all the medical stuff Apple and the watch can do now, but they should pay to play if using others IP.

Interesting...
Samsung watches do similar (monitors O2 levels), and also does more regarding sleep than Apple's watch does. Wonder if they're going to be hit at all by this...hope not--love my Samsung Galaxy watch.

https://www.inc.com/kit-eaton/lessons-from-masimos-fight-over-apple-watch-series-9-patents.html
In 2013, Masimo launched a portable pulse oximeter device that connected to Apple systems. Representatives from Apple later met with Masimo, briefly, but reportedly weren't interested because Masimo's business was too focused on the clinical side of the technology. Then Masimo employees began to leave to work for Apple, including its chief medical officer. Apple filed a number of patents relating to blood oxygen sensing in 2019, naming the former CMO of Masimo as inventor. He's poured $100 million in Masimo's profits into legal fights with Apple to date, the paper reported. (not quite David, but..)
