How do you sink a Korean cruise ship???
First a Malaysian 777 completely disappears off the globe. Now, a Korean cruise ship with 400+ people on board lists quickly and sinks in 100 feet of water. Any thoughts on how this could have happened? The ship was north of 500 feet long and in 30m of water (almost 100 feet). What could it have possibly struck in 100 feet of water that would plow a gaping whole in the hull?

Reports are that cargo was apparently unsecured and thus shifted.
The captain then delayed the order to abandon ship by at least 30 minutes - which essentially led to many being trapped below deck....and potentially killed. They were unsuccessful in pumping air inside the capsized vessel so tomorrow are going to bring three ships in with cranes to try and re-right the ship. Personally - I don't know why they didn't cut the exposed portion of the hull open with torches to gain access.... This is very tragic - most lost were teenagers. Terrible....

The air trapped in the inverted hull is keeping the ferry afloat

God almighty - don't say things like that while I'm drinking anything! Coffee burns the sinuses coming out the nose! Funniest thing I've read in a long time. Nicely played!

Note to self, stay out of Korean piloted modes of transportation. They seem to be running out of talent and good judgment long before exhausting their supplies of ego...jeebus. Maybe stick with video games and simulators instead of the real thing.

Reports say only one life raft was deployed and guess who was on it ? Supposedly the captain.

Captain is now facing charges. And yes, he was one of the first people of the ship.

Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers explains some Korean linguistic and cultural quirks that contributed to several KAL plane crashes and near crashes. I have no idea if any of that contributed to this disaster, but it's a very interesting read.

I speak/understand zero Korean so I'm hoping the translated communication below is poorly done and/or that there are lots of nuances to the language that just don't translate to English or are left out?
(CNN) -- The following is a transcript of communication between the sinking South Korean ferry Sewol and the local maritime traffic control, Jeju Vessel Traffic Services Center, after the ship faced danger. The original transcript, provided by South Korea's Ministry of Ocean and Fisheries, is in Korean and was translated by CNN. 8:55 a.m. Sewol: Harbor affairs Jeju, do you have reception of Sewol? Jeju Vessel Traffic Services Center: Yes, Sewol, this is Harbor affairs Jeju Sewol: Please notify the coast guard. Our ship is in danger. The ship is rolling right now. 8:56 a.m. Jeju Vessel Traffic Services Center: Where is your ship? Yes, OK. We will notify the coast guard. Sewol: The ship rolled over a lot right now. Cannot move. Please come quickly. Sewol: We're next to Byeongpung Island. Jeju Vessel Traffic Services Center: Yes, understood. 8:58 a.m. Jeju Vessel Traffic Services Center: Sewol, this is Harbor affairs Jeju. Do you have reception? Sewol, this is Harbor affairs Jeju. 8:59 a.m. Sewol: Harbor affairs Jeju, this is Sewol Jeju Vessel Traffic Services Center: Sewol, this is Harbor affairs Jeju. Channel 21, please. 9:00 a.m. Jeju Vessel Traffic Services Center: What's the current situation? Sewol: Currently, the body of the ship is tilted to the left. Containers fell over, too. Jeju Vessel Traffic Services Center: OK. There are no damages to people? Sewol: Currently, it's impossible to confirm. It is impossible to move as the body of the ship is tilted. Jeju Vessel Traffic Services Center: Yes, OK. Please put on the life vests and get ready as people may have to abandon ship. Sewol: It is hard for people to move. Jeju Vessel Traffic Services Center: Yes, OK. 9:05 a.m. Sewol: Harbor affairs Jeju, do you have reception of Sewol? Jeju Vessel Traffic Services Center: Yes, this is Harbor affairs Jeju, Sewol. Sewol: What's going on with the coast guard? Jeju Vessel Traffic Services Center: Yes, we just notified the coast guard. We are in the middle of conversation with Jindo VTS and Wando VTS. So please hold for a moment. Reading through this reminds me of the translated dialog from a B rated asian movie. Surely this is a translation effect only?
