https://kfor.com/news/local/okc-planning-commission-approve-plans-for-proposed-skyscraper-downtown/

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — The Oklahoma City Planning Commission gave an initial stamp of approval to build one of the nation’s tallest buildings in Oklahoma City.

The developer and architect of the “Boardwalk at Bricktown” pled their case before the commission on Thursday for approval on the height of the building.

“The project consists of four towers, a retail podium and a below grade parking, and then some above grade parking,” said the architect for Boardwalk at Bricktown.

The tallest of the four buildings and the point of controversy, would reach 1,907 feet which would be one of the tallest buildings in the world.

Some of the Commission members asked if the city needs this development.

“We really see that this will be the impetus to really just create an entertainment district and, you know, why not be first,” said the architect for Boardwalk at Bricktown.

Residents also voiced their concerns about the safety of the mega skyscraper.

“What plan is in place? If a plane full of fuel crashes into it, causing it to tumble down? Isn’t one terrorist attack enough?” asked one resident.

The Planning Commission ultimately decided to give the stamp of approval for the height of the proposed building.

I will be surprised if they don't drop it down a little bit. Tallest in Oklahoma and OkC is Devon Tower at 844. Next tallest in OKC is 500.

I think it’s a mistake to build it right now.

There is currently a pretty big glut of commercial office space and it’s getting worse. I think the occupancy levels are at or near all-time lows, nationwide.

There is a serious risk that the economy will turn south within the next 12 months.

Things are rapidly going south in the Middle East, and we have a real chance of being in a hot war that we can’t win before the end of the year.

I think there’s more than a 50-50 chance that will have some major terrorist activity within the US this year. Not just the usual small, isolated crap, but something more widespread and larger in scale.

I think there’s a pretty good chance of the deep state pulling another election year pandemic on us.

Lots of uncertainty, and that building is nothing special to recommend it other than its height. It’s a very inefficient design, similar to one in New York. If you’re going to build a building with the intention of making money, that’s not the design I’d pick. It’s also not in the city where I would choose to build it.

I don't think we should ever 'bow down' to possible terrorists.

If it were up to me....I would say "Go for it...if you can do it"
(of course I have no skin in the game)

Rich people never got rich by doing stupid things. In my opinion, the risk exceeds the potential return, so I don’t think it’ll fly.

But I don’t have any skin in the game, either.

Let me preface by saying, I'm not arguing any of the points that you made.

But as I began to read this post, I thought about all of tabs' posts.

But, for this to have been a tabs post, instead of 188 words, it would have needed to be 1888, and there would also need to be some sort of "as I've predicted before that you've never heeded" at least once, possibly several times.

Most everyone is skeptical. BUT, the developer is not new new guy at big projects. He had built many other major projects, and he claims he has the 1.5 billion in financing all done to build the tower.

Building tall loses a lot of useable space to vertical transport.

There's a reason when making tall buildings there can be substantial ornamental structure taking up the higher elevations.

OKC has extensive internet structure and is centrally located in the US.

Multiple Oklahoma cities were hit. Sulphur, Ardmore, possibly Norman with less damage. Even more likely. It was a heck of a storm system. Tornado, hail, and severe flooding. I was very lucky. It set up about 10 miles east of me and moved east very slowly.

Ardmore and Sulphur are south of okc. About 100 miles. Norman about 20 miles.

Fracking crazy.

https://www.usgs.gov/faqs/does-fracking-cause-earthquakes
Quote:
Does fracking cause earthquakes?

Most induced earthquakes are not directly caused by hydraulic fracturing (fracking). The recent increase in earthquakes in the central United States is primarily caused by disposal of waste fluids that are a byproduct of oil production.

Wastewater disposal wells typically operate for longer durations and inject much more fluid than is injected during the hydraulic fracturing process, making them more likely to induce earthquakes. In Oklahoma, which has the most induced earthquakes in the United States, 2% of earthquakes can be linked to hydraulic fracturing operations. Given the high rate of seismicity in Oklahoma, this means that there are still many earthquakes induced by hydraulic fracturing. The remaining earthquakes are induced by wastewater disposal. The largest earthquake known to be induced by hydraulic fracturing in the United States was a magnitude 4.0 earthquake that occurred in 2018 in Texas.

Oklahoma earthquake swarms (2009–present)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oklahoma_earthquake_swarms_(2009%E2%80%93present)
Quote:
The Oklahoma earthquake swarms are an ongoing series of human activity-induced earthquakes affecting central Oklahoma, southern Kansas, northern Texas since 2009.[6][7][8] Beginning in 2009, the frequency of earthquakes in the U.S. state of Oklahoma rapidly increased from an average of fewer than two 3.0+ magnitude earthquakes per year since 1978[9] to hundreds each year in the 2014–17 period. Thousands of earthquakes have occurred in Oklahoma and surrounding areas in southern Kansas and North Texas since 2009.[10] Scientific studies attribute the rise in earthquakes to the disposal of wastewater produced during oil extraction that has been injected more deeply into the ground.[11][12]

Two of the most significant earthquakes in these swarms were the November 5, 2011 Prague earthquake east of the Oklahoma City area and the September 3, 2016 earthquake near Pawnee, north of Prague. The 2011 Prague earthquake, at reported magnitude 5.6, was at the time the strongest recorded earthquake in the history of Oklahoma.[13] The 2016 earthquake was initially reported to be an identical 5.6 magnitude,[14] but this was later upgraded to 5.8, making it the strongest earthquake on record.[15][16] Simultaneously, the USGS upgraded the magnitude of the Prague earthquake to 5.7.[15][16] Numerous seismologists had advised local residents of an even greater risk of earthquakes in 2014, by which time the number of earthquakes had increased to a dangerously high level. In response to the major increase in earthquakes in the Central United States, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) began developing a new seismic hazard model to account for risk associated with induced seismicity. By June 26, 2014, no fewer than six individual earthquake sequences in Oklahoma had been identified and named by the Oklahoma Geological Survey (OGS).[17] Other swarms have been observed in south-central Kansas and North Texas.
Historically speaking, a tall tower in the middle of an otherwise flat area can be a landmark attraction.

Price Tower
https://franklloydwright.org/site/price-tower/
Quote:
The inspiration for the oil pipeline firm’s “tower in a country town” was an unrealized 1925 proposal of Wright’s for a New York City apartment building called St. Mark’s Tower. Wright described the design as a tree-like mast supported by a central “trunk” of four elevator shafts anchored by a deep central foundation. The Price Tower’s 19 concrete floors cantilever like branches of a tree. Freed from their load-bearing function, the exterior walls become ornamental screens decorated in patinated copper “leaves” and gold-tinted glass. The materials for the Price Tower were equally innovative for the era: cast concrete walls, pigmented concrete floors, and aluminum-trimmed windows and doors. The Price Tower completely changed the horizon of the Oklahoma prairie town. Purchased in 1981 by Phillips Petroleum, the Price Tower Arts Center now includes a museum, hotel and bar. The Inn at Price Tower occupies seven of the upper floors of the Wright skyscraper.

Yea, we ended up with just over 1.5 inches of rain, and LOTS of thunder.

Sulphur (not Sulfur) was hammered. The downtown area of Sulpur with many old buildings were torn up. A couple of deaths state wide. It was a bad pookie storm. People from every state in the union and many foreign countries are in downtown OKC for the bombing memorial marathon today. No doubt many were freaked out with all the thunder and storms.

We watch the locally owned KWTV 9 station. They have a state of the art million watt dual pole radar system. It can show debris in the air from a tornado touch down, and the storms were moving at 60 MPH across the ground. The chief meteorologist was on the air, non stop for over 14 hours showing the radar, and talking to their large crew of storm trackers. No commercials, nothing at all but weather coverage for most of the day.

All in all, a very small part of the state was damaged, and civilization is just blocks away, and lots of help pouring in. It sucks for the areas hit, and it is sad a mother and baby died.

Fracking does not cause the earthquakes. It is the salt water disposal wells that cause them. Those are mostly shut down, and the earthquakes are mostly gone.

Links I provided said 2% from fracking, the rest from wastewater disposal.

As I understand it the mini-quakes have gone down when the fracking has gone down.

I'm not sure what's been agitating those larger quakes that have been reported.

I'd be designing that tower as if I were in Tokyo or Los Angeles, just say'n.
