				VW beetle question.

It's actually a 1975 Kombi and asking on behalf of the guy next door. He said it's getting a bit hard to drive as the rev's drop too fast and the engine stalls when he is shifting down gears. To me it sounds like a deceleration valve issue. But I wouldn't know as it's been half a lifetime since I had a VW. What are your thoughts and thanks. | ||

Accelerator pumps in the carbs gone bad ??? I know when they get bad enough, you have to keep giving them gas by pumping the accelerator when rpm's fall.

Along the lines of Jeff’s suggestion, make sure there’s air in the tires. I believe WDfifteen recently restored an old VW. Maybe ping him.

I'd say Decel Valve but I'm not sure this car has one. Unless it has an automatic transmission, then maybe. You know....one of those auto-clutch thingies.

probably really simple like a fuel filter or air filter...but maybe points or fouled plugs. A tune up would most likely fix it.

The engine is fine. It's one of those 1600 ones. The only problem with it is the rev's dropping to too fast when he throttles off. I don't know if he has the book. Other than this he seems to be quite good at working on it.

Low compression engines don't fall off quickly when the throttle is closed. I'd be interested in hearing it as he turned it off at idle. He should turn it over by hand. If not relatively free to turn, it's binding and maybe ready to seize.

Don't waste money on Miur's book. Yes, it's a cult classic, but if you want to fix your own VW get the Bentley manual.

Another carburetion possibility could be a hole in thr float in the carb which will let the float fill with gas and not function right. That can make the rpm's drop when off throttle. If it dies without pumping the accelerator, that can be an indication.

A '75 bus would be fuel injection, in the US at least.

Thanks guys. I'll bundle up the suggestions and pass them on. Other than this deceleration problem it seems to go well.
