Jeesh I gotta admit...that does sound pretty good right about now! Might just be a great time to embrace the nostalgia!

Hmmm, wondering what Spam cooked in an air fryer would be like, I mean I've cooked hotdogs and plant based brats in the air fryer so I would think it would be like, well, fried Spam.

I always thought it was weird that a Japanese guy from Hawaii would like Spam and rice, for breakfast. Turns out that being a long boat ride from everywhere makes canned meat look like foie gras, go figure.

Pete made a number of spamtacular dishes.

That's about as obscure as it gets. What conversation are you in?

Actually, I think it got popularized by the Nisei soldiers coming home WW2. I'm from Hawaii and of Japanese descent, but I don't eat a lot of those meats. Mom never really used SPAM, but when the SPAM musubi craze started when I was in college, she joined in. People like it in a satojoyu sauce, but not me. If I make one of those things, I just pan fry it and put it in the musubi press. It has to have rice on the top and bottom, and wrapped in half a sheet of nori.

Nowdays, I prefer Tulip over SPAM. You can make a nice sandwich with fried SPAM and a fried egg. Mayo is a must, and I love it with my egg sunny side up.

[QUOTE=herr_oberst;12241517]I cannot find my recipe for Spambalaya. There's a few on the google, but I kind of liked mine, so until I find it not going to post.

Here's some things I've put together over the years. I really like the Spam Enchiladas.

How does a person grate Spam?
Or has Spam changed in texture since the last I had it? (50 years ago)

SPAM and other similar canned meats were a classic menu item for my 1970's and 1980's Boy Scout back packing days. Wood smoke and frying SPAM brings back memories.

I had the exact dish many times growing up in East Tenn.

Also sliced/fried with eggs.

If'n I got lucky, Mom would let me open the can.

I can remember at least 2 Boy Scout campouts where some hapless Scout required medical attention because of the sharp edges left after opening the can; heck, I might have been a victim. I do lean towards the accident prone.

It's funny how we just accepted minor dangers BITD!

The preferred alternative to SPAM in my early years.......

Notice it's clearly labeled "Only Premium Ham and Spices"....and did not have the slime/jelly of SPAM if I recall correctly

Mom used to have those in the pantry. An easy meal was Vienna sausage and rice. I wouldn't touch the deviled meat and potted meat. I did like Braunschweiger on soda crackers.

I don’t recommend it.
So far I’ve had it fried in a sandwich, uncooked in a sandwich, and fried with an egg for breakfast. Yesterday I was in a hurry for lunch and I threw a slice in the microwave to heat it up for a sandwich. The smell was not pleasant - or appetizeing. I don’t know how something can taste good to OK raw or cooked and smell so bad when merely heated.

I’m thinking cutting a block into about 6 pieces - think square hot dogs - jamming them on sticks and roasting them over a campfire might be interesting.

My grandfather was a house painter. He used to stop by the little shack of a store at the crossroads on his way to a job and get a small box saltines, a 7 once Coke, and a can of “Vy-anna” sausages for lunch. On the days he took me to work with him I got the same lunch and it was a HUGE treat.

Hahahahaha!

I picked up a recipe from this forum a few years back for a chicken dip. It calls for a couple of cans of (yes cans) of chicken...

I made this concoction in a slow cooker and it was the hit of the appetizers at the party we went to.

The canned chicken smelled like cat food. The end product was delicious!
