Spamquest 2024
It's the reality TV show concept I'm going to pitch.
![]() Any Spam fans here? I haven't had Spam since I was a kid. My mom used to put cloves and brown sugar on a block of it and bake it. I think I've also had it sliced and fried. I was in the grocery store a couple days ago and they had "original" Spam on sale for $1 off. On a whim I bought a can. For lunch today I made a fried Spam slider with locally made potato chips, some really great local German mustard, homemade coleslaw, and iced tea. Spam is really, really salty. It's edible, but there are a lot better processed meat food products out there - if you are into such things. ![]()

I do a crossword puzzle a day. A clue was "Island favorite treat".
https://www.vice.com/en/article/mgx7yx/why-hawaiians-are-utterly-obsessed-with-spam Hawaii consumes 7 million cans of Spam a year and there are only 1.42 million of us currently living in the islands—let that sink in a little bit. Nonetheless, Spam is both a blessing and a curse to Hawaiian cuisine. Once I had the s, p and m I was good to go ![]()

I enjoy spam on the regular.
I've also made recipes using spam for pot luck, and spoiler alert, they're always a hit. Spambalya, Spamchaladas, Spam dip..... (At my age I get the low sodium; it's still pretty salty.)

I have not purchased or eaten SPAM in over 40 years. Too much else to eat that is better.

I cannot find my recipe for Spambalaya. There's a few on the google, but I kind of liked mine, so until I find it not going to post.
Here's some things I've put together over the years. I really like the Spam Enchiladas. (always time for Spam!) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I’m sure this is not something for the food snobs. But for me, I love a fried spam sandwich! Whenever I go down to our lake cabin by myself, I’m always sure to stop off at the store and buy a can of spam. And my dogs love the leftover grease that I pour over their dog food. So I guess they love spam to!

I also haven’t had Spam since my early youth. I seem to remember it as being good, but I just can’t get myself to try it as an adult.
They had a food booth at the MN State Fair selling Spam sandwiches and other “delicacies”. I walked towards it thinking this was going to be the day I tried it again, but I couldn’t do it.

As a growing teenager - my mom had already raised my 3 older sisters that were out of the house - so it was just my Dad, Mom and my younger sister. My mom was tired of cooking right around the time that my growing body was interested in consumption of calories.
One of her "meals" offered for dinner - was a block of spam which she had sliced into 1/4" thick slices and interspersed between each slice, she placed a slice of cheddar cheese of 1/4" thickness which had been cut from the 1 lb block. She placed this in an baker's pan in the oven at 350 until "done." I periodically joke with my wife about Spam casserole for dinner.

In 2004 I bought my first 911 here on pelican. It was located in Columbus, OH. I drove down to get it and literally ‘brought a trailer’… see what I did there?
As we descended into a valley somewhere in Wisconsin or Minnesota, we encountered a horrific smell. As we approached a small town, the smell got worse. Finally, we saw it, in all its glory, steaming like a fresh turd on a cold winter day… the Hormel SPAM factory. I felt like I needed to shower and burn my clothes after passing through that town. I have not had SPAM since but will admit to eying it up at Walmart on Saturday night.

I buy cases of Spam at Costco. I get the reduced sodium to cut down on the saltiness. Fried Spam and eggs , Spam fried rice, Spam Masubi, Spam Loco Moco, etc.
Did you know Todd Rundgren owns a restaurant on the island of Kauai that usually features Spam dishes? https://tikiiniki.com And Spam is made from pork butt and other good parts of the hog. No lips, noses or anuses as has been rumored..

It's not fake meat. It's cat food for humans. I stopped eating ALL meats including fish in 1985. I quit eating things like bacon in the 70's. I don't think my mother ever bought Spam but I know I've had it. Probably at a friend's house in grade school. I didn't care for the look of it then. I think the jelly that comes out of the can looked very unnatural. That was the 50's and likely the beginning of my distaste for flesh.
I know anything ground up into a paste and shoved into a sleeve (or God forbid an intestine) was on my list by the time I was 20. I think my weak spot was prime rib, the antithesis of Spam. I pretty much gag at the thought of pnk meat today. I bet I'd leave the room if you opened a can of Spam. I will leave if you cook bacon. |

Way back when I was a boy scout (sometime before the last ice age) - I loved to spear an entire block of spam on a stick...roast it over a campfire until nice and crispy on the outside...eat away this crispy outside...then back over the fire it went - and on and on like this until the very last crispy bite was...gone!
Jeesh I gotta admit...that does sound pretty good right about now! Might just be a great time to embrace the nostalgia! |

Good, more for me. Truth be told, though, I might eat as much as a strip every few months, but it's flippin' good when I do! _
