Head on collision… Close call

I was driving to one of our houses on Johns Island this morning, on a two lane rd., with huge oak trees on either side. As I looked down the road, an older small car was in my lane , coming towards me. I stood on the brakes, moved to the right and he went back into his lane, after passing two cars, with a few feet to spare. My window was down, but I didn’t see the driver. His engine was screaming.

Damn, it was close.

Be careful out there.

Happened to me a while back in my Volvo - and I posted the video here.

I too was able to move to the right and evade the inevitable....

The roads can certainly be dangerous. I haven't had an accident in many years (touch wood) but sometimes I wish I had just stayed at home. "Other Drivers" are always the problem

- I lowered my expectations of other drivers years ago. People stuff up often.

Glad your okay. Sounds terrifying. I wonder what the deal was.
BTW, I love John’s Island. I imagine it’s what the whole area was like 100 years ago.

I'm glad you're OK. Sounds like that was too close.

Close one for you.

There are lots of stupid people out there. I posted about the motorcycle that went around the double yellow, as I slotted into the open space and he was hit head on by another car right next to my driver window. I stopped and that poor young girl that hit him was in shaken up badly. You can be careful but there are a bunch of azz holds out there.

You guys all have dash cams?

I have them for the Volvo and Silverado and one I haven't installed for the Boxster yet.

I like to review them periodically and make sure they are working, just in case.

Here's a vid from the other day.......three 3 minute clips put together on a run to our Walmart in the Silverado:

I forgot all about my dash cam. I’ll try to take a look today.

Petrifying. The one thing I've noticed after leaving the middle of the city for the mountains, is that way too many people straddle the center line. Almost every day I pass someone who is at least partially in my lane, and most of the time, it is on a blind curve.

People just do not know how to drive. That, and they're busy doing other stuff rather than paying attention. It truly makes me want to sell my two-seaters and get a massive truck--so at least I'll be loaded for bear!

Other drivers is the reason I stopped riding motorcycles. You just can't control all the idiots on the road . They are everywhere !!! Stay safe folks .

Way back in the early 70s while driving my VW bug, some likely drunk driver was weaving down the road and coming at me. I literally drove off the road into the bar ditch to avoid him as he then proceeded to drive off the road on the other side and into a bunch of trees. I had a hard time getting out of the ditch and my car was covered in mud after that. I drove home the mile or two and called the police to report it. I was so mad at the time I was hoping he died, I never heard the outcome, and I did not care. He did not hurt anyone else that night.

Not too long ago I was on the valley road that leads out of my neighborhood. It is a typical two lane back road that follows the twists and turns of the river running alongside it.

I was on the trike and a service van coming at me was slowly drifting into my lane on a sweeping turn. I could see the driver looking down most likely on a cell phone. Fortunately I had plenty of shoulder to work with so I moved off of the travel surface and laid on the horn. The butt head was fully into my lane when he looked up, over corrected and nearly went into the woods. Dumbazz.

Lots of folks doing stupid stuff behind the wheel out there all over the place.

Gotta be careful, and even then, you can't guaranty that they won't get you.

This is why I won't ride a motorcycle. Too many stupid people who are oblivious to the risks they are exposing others to, or they simply don't care.

Maybe I'm getting old and ornery, but these days the people coming at me on the road only use the lines as a guideline. They feel that as long as they are in-between the lines they are good. Being in the center of the 2 lines is not needed. No biggie if they go over the line every now and again.

Another perspective:
Driving in Mexico is for real, 12'" tall shoulder drop offs are very common on a 18' wide road on the side of a mountain. The bus drivers there have nerves of steel. Oncoming big rig trucks have lights on their left mirrors you aim at to pass.

And that's why I'd love to have a train horn on the boxster in tandem with the regular horn...

Regular horn, beep, beep, for "the light turned, stop looking down and go"

train horn for "wake up, you're drifting lanes and being dangerous"

What I've noticed in the Houston area is that folks figure that if they change lanes in front of you or beside you slowly enough, they are being polity because they are giving you the opportunity to slow down or swerve whether they're cutting you off or merging into you or not.

I mostly don't let it get to me. There's no point in getting excited about something that's as common and normal as breathing.

Here's one that happened today.

I was out on my bicycle this morning on one of my BACK back roads. It is very low in traffic. I'm off of the fog line on the travel surface when I pick up lights in my mirror. I do the butt wiggle with the bike so the tail light gets some lateral movement.

I'm approaching a left hand turn but it's fully wooded so no visibility through the turn. It's double yellow the entire length of the road because of the forest. As I'm moving to the right the driver accelerates and crosses over the double yellow to pass me. Sure enough a car comes around the curve from the other direction. The guy passing me over steers and cuts me off nearly clipping me with the rear quarter panel. Goes on his merry way fish tailing down the road. Bastage.
