‘Who should I agree with?’ - that’s the problem

We are living with the ‘who should I agree with?’ generations and this is our problem.

We were having a silly conversation in my truck last night and my daughter and I were arguing about what a world said backwards… her friend who was with us said, ‘who should I agree with?’

I think this stems from ‘the be kind, no matter what’ sentiment. It seems like our kids have and are being taught that it’s more important to be kind and agreeable than to have their own critical thought and make their own decisions.

I think LOTS of folks don't think for themselves and just agree with someone else that's got a strong opinion, often, with the goal of being on the winning side. I think that's why peer pressure is often so effective at getting folks to do stuff that they otherwise wouldn't do. It may have intensified from the past to now where folks are trying to "fit in" more, but I don't think it's anything new. Maybe what's new is that more idiots have strong opinions and those idiots are able to win more, so the lemmings are following idiots more?

I agree with the people expounding the facts as I see them on matters of opinion. History is a harder thing to pin down sometimes.

I used to see a quote here from time to time.
"If you don't stand for something, you'll stand for anything. "
There is more than a bit of truth to that, but it also means one should be prepared to separate fiction from fact. Reality is not always what one wishes.
Trying to impress that upon our granddaughter.

You can do both. I don't feel compelled to argue with everyone who has a stupid, uninformed opinion. It's a lot easier, and just as effective, to affect a weak smile and keep my opinion to myself.

These days, it seems to be more about the "likes" than having an original thought.

we should be more interested in what ideas we agree with, rather than people.

Prime example. I'm far more agreeable with CP's idea above, than I am with CP.

I've heard that I'm considered an opinionated S.O.B. I prefer to think I reason things through, then decide on a position. (edit) There are also things I have no opinion on because I don't care one way or another. That happened more frequently as I aged...my "give a damn" meter needle creeping towards zero.

Social engineering is a strong part of many curriculums.
There are graded multiple choice bits that give better grades to those that have peer pressure as their decision driver.

Which does make me wonder where much of the internet went with widespread social media, how many were real people, how many were a few people that looked like many? How many are not people at all?
And all, pushing on a US society where those that got the grades and got the decision making jobs are extra suspectable. *

Some damned fine questions there...also, why are there social engineering curriculums at all? Should that be the job of the government funded schools?

I've always tried to focus on the truth or what has been proven to be true.

Not having an opinion is always an option (I do this often).

Kids (at my age that's anyone under 25) don't want to be different and feel they need to fit into a certain group. that's one of the reasons influencers do so well. They get paid to say something and the masses say "Words of the wise." and agree with them.

Also it's concern with having the ultra left school teachers brainwashing the young kids and the kids agreeing with them.
