Another Credit Card Fraud Attempt

My card got declined at the grocery store this morning (luckily I had cash too) and also when I tried to pay my garbage bill.

Called the CC company and they sent me straight to the fraud department without me asking. Turns out someone changed the mailing address to somewhere in Florida. This is the second time this has happened in a few years. Cannot understand how they are able to do it unless it was an inside job?

Nothing got charged and they are sending a new card- man, I hate these scammers.

First time it happened the scumbags bought a few thousand dollars in Home Depot gift cards. You would think that changing an address and then buying a bunch of gift cards would have set off some sort of fraud alert?

I have had a few attempts over the years with my Discover card. They always seemed to stay on top of it. If something looked slightly off they would contact me before the charge went through. One of the reasons I stay with them.
I had an issue with my TD debit card where things were purchased on Amazon. I always thought it was an inside job with that one. I had never used that card and it sat in the file cabinet since the day it was issued, so I couldn't figure out how anyone outside of the bank could get the information. TD did take care of it though.
My wife works for TD. It is unbelievable how many scammers try things every week. One day she had a woman come in and say she wanted to open a new account in addition to an existing account. She had what seemed to be a valid NJ drivers license, along with some other forms of ID and account information. While my wife was working with her, 2 local police walked in and arrested her. My wife was extremely surprised since she had just started to get the forms out and was checking the ID's. No one in the bank had called in to the police.
The officers explained to her that they had received a call from a someone that happened to be walking by this woman and another person on the sidewalk. That individual had overheard the woman and her partner discussing their plot to defraud the bank and notified the police before they got through the front door. Thank goodness for that good Samaritan for getting involved.

Or lots and lots of shoes.

Also seeing if they buy Porsche or BMX parts.

The only thing better than a credit card is someone else's credit card.

I had 4 credit card fraud attempts over a couple of years. I looked back on all my statements and found 3 plant store purchases preceded the fraud attempt by about a week. No other charges matched up. There was a 4th purchase that went through clean. I stopped shopping there and no further problems. They went out of business about a month ago.

The thing I can’t understand is how they were able to get into my account and change the address?

I’m a big user of cash too, especially on small purchases.

I used my CC at a certain Mexican restaurant. A day later my CC company called and claimed to be the CC company. I asked for her extension, and I called the number on the back of my card, and asked for her extension. She asked if I was in Italy trying to buy a lot of scuba gear. I said NO, I am at home and I don;t scuba.

Later I learned an employee at the restaurant was copying CC numbers and sold them on line. He was caught, and put in jail until trial. The CC company sent me a new card and I did not lose a cent, just the annoyance of setting up the new card for my on-line purchases. Now they text me to approve an unusual charge.

Several theories:

1. You have a weak password.
2. Your information was leaked as part of another data breach.
3. Your bank was breached.
4. They stole your mail and have a lot of information about you.

Some suggestions:

1. Change your passwords and turn on 2-factor authentication.
2. Put a hold in all the credit bureaus.
3. Ask your bank what method the other party used to request an update. Did they call? Did they login online? And go from there.

I hate, and I mean HATE, these low life Bustards. When I have had fraud, Visa contacted me or I picked up small charges on my bill. Regardless, it involved a bunch of work by me to reset all of my auto pay stuff which is a PITA and time consuming.

When caught, these lowlifes should be stripped naked and publicly flogged.

My CC company (USAA) will now send me a text for unusual charges that are not my normal purchases. Stopping at some out of the way restaurant while on vacation, they will text me.

The funny thing is I am the treasurer for my PCA region. When we have our Christmas dinner, all the members mail me a check, and I deposit it in the club account. The restaurant does not want a check, so I use my personal credit card.

My CC company sees a bill at a nice restaurant a few weeks before Christmas, and says, sure a $2,700 charge is OK. No text from the CC company at all.

I have another separate CC with USAA that we use for company expenses only. I had a heck of time convincing them that we might fill up the airplane in OKC for $275.00 fly to some remote airport in eastern Colorado fill up with $250 in fuel, fly to Nebraska and get more fuel for $300. I finally got them to accept the fact that no one fraudulently will be using our CC at small airports for self service fuel.

Another advantage of using cash-
With very few credit card charges each month, it's a quick glance at the statement to see that all charges are legit.
I do check every month before paying the bill.

I have used Quicken for all my personal accounts since the 1980s. Almost every day, I download the accounts to Quicken. I them balance and reconcile each account. Nothing slips in.

My wife pays the bills. Has ever since we got married.
She goes thru each bill with a fine tooth comb. I catch heck if the receipts aren't in the file drawer when she does this. Most times I forget it's a bill for gas, but since I log all my gas in the log books I keep for each car, I can verify the purchase fairly easily. That practice has saved my bacon numerous times. Thanks Dad for instilling in me the perseverance to continue this practice. It's not only saved my bacon, it's helped me sell some cars too.

Got my new card yesterday and it works!

I got a very competent fraud person when I called the card company and she expedited my new card and also was able to credit me an old charge that happened because a WAWA in Florida that accepted the card the last time and was denied, actually resubmitted the charge months later, so I had to write another letter, but the card company never followed up on it.

Lastly, she canceled my online account in case the criminals still had access and then had me open a new one.

I made a new password that should be difficult to hack.

I still think this one and the last one were an inside job.

Cracking down on all these scams should be a nationwide priority. I can only imagine how many elderly or less savvy people get taken.

CC’s with pin is only $15 on the dark web…

Always use MFA, tell the bank absolutely no changes to the card, account, address, email, contact number unless done at a branch. Make sure this is documented on all your accounts. If something gets changed it’s the banks fault. (Usually is anyway)
