The "kid" got what he deserved. As David said, he challenged the officer, then moved towards him. He is lucky that times have changed. 40 years ago, the kid would have gotten a beat down. He was trying to be a badass in front of his friends and it backfired.

I think the cop should have warned him. Once. "Step back, stop the threatening talk, or I will arrest you." By laughing and smirking, 'get a load of this kid', the cop gave the impression that he thought the situation was funny.

After a warning everything the cop did is sort of okay by me.

Agreed. The smiling and smirking probably goaded the kid on in a way. And agreed, the cop should have said something similar to your statement or something like that to allow the kid to understand would have been a better way to go than what happened. I do think the cop did a good job of retaining his cool, and didn't necessarily do anything wrong, but he could have done better. Do I think that him saying that would have changed the situation/outcome? No, I don't think it would have made a bit of difference to what the kid was doing, but we'll never know.

Yep ... but it would have NEVER happened in my world .... not even to someone not in a uniform. If you push the "wrong button" on some folks ....

It's not a random interaction on the street, it is his job. It is theoretically what he's trained to do. The analysis and thoughtful review should have happened in training.

You misread my post. My post had zero to do with the kid, or the cop, being female instead of male. My point was... Oh never mind... You don't want to understand. You just want to wag your finger.

But you do broach an interesting question. What if the big mouth was a pretty 20yo girl? Would you feel differently about the cop's actions? I think you'll say you would not. I also think in reality it would matter.

Chris Rock's advice is very good. And done in such a way he gets the message across.

In my teenage years at a beach holiday place we used to ride motorbikes around the roads and beaches with no helmets. it's always been a strict law here - wear a helmet. One day there was a cop outside store/bar/cafe and he pulled me over for no helmet. I said along the lines of "Sorry Sir, I won't do it again, very sorry." Cop would be something like "Don't do it again and I'll be back tomorrow too."

A friend put up a big argument that turned into a fight. A guy with a tractor with lobster pots stopped and helped the cop and they tied Angus up with a rope and put him in the back of the police car. Angus kicked the window out of the car.

Later he was proudly telling us what he had done. We said that's pretty stupid and you missed out on a good day, plus you'll get fined. He said something like "I ain'ts takin' no chit from no cop and they can't fine me because I owe them so much money already."

Some time later Rob and I thought we better phone Angus as we were his only friends. His mom said "Sorry Dear, Angus isn't here. He's in jail and won't be back for three months." When he did get back we asked him did he learn a lesson and all he said about it was the food was quite good LOL

For effective communication, one should use the same language as the listener.
Speaking to a college professor should be different than speaking with a kindergartener.
If in Germany, speaking German will be the most effective. Yada, yada....

In this case, little mop head was speaking pure testosterone.
As such, any hint of kinder/gentler language is perceived as "here's a weakling I can manipulate".

The cop, rightly so, responded in the same language.
"I'm a tough guy!"
"Um,... No, you're not".

Effective communication. Resulted in mop head's apology.

from a Police officer who was a PCA member, when I joined PCA a younger, one of the 1st things that he empathize, was Be Polite, don't be Combative, make sure that you DO Not act in a threatening manner. Even if the cop is being a dick, do NOT challenge his authority. Do not try and run, as even the fat ones are faster than you think, and you will only piss them off. That advice has served me well, and yes, there have been a few times that I had to deal with total dicks. The one that stands out the most, is when I 1st rented our big shop, in the industrial park I have been in since the 80s.




I signed the papers on Friday, got the keys, and had set up for power and phone the following week. As I already had other space in the park, no big deal. I started moving cars and stuff that weekend. If you look at the 2nd picture, I was standing about where the Baz bike is, we had 3 big bay doors, like the one behind the XJR, one on the other side and one in the back of the building. We'll, I am in there, starting to try and move in, when, coming from the door visible, a short cop comes in, screaming

What are you doing here?

Which I reply, moving in, then he starts asking about the cars, I inform him they belong to me. At this point he tells me that he is replying to an alarm, and again, ask what I am doing. I explained again, that I just rented the space, call Pat and she can verify my story. Well, he yells,

(she, at that point, had been the property manager for 30 years, and was well known) and again, he responds that he is responding to the alarm. At this point, I pointed out that, 1), I don't have phone service, it is scheduled to be installed on Monday, 2), I Don’t have electricity, and it was scheduled to be set up on Wednesday, all easily verified, hell, one call to the property manager would of as well. About this time, another deputy comes in through the other door (I'm in Florida, they were open to give me air and light) but, as pointed out, I was literally in the middle of the building, no where near the doors. When he FINALLY figured out that he was wrong, and again, I remembered the early lessons about dealing with law enforcement, instead of apologizing for what was literally harassment, as well as illegal entry (I had no alarm, there was nothing to indicate anything illegal going on) this little runt tells me,

At this point, I replied, yeah, my business partner and family would have been pissed it you shot me.
A week later, I was a function at one of the elite type clubs I was a member of, and the Sheriff was there. I gave him the same point by point description of the incident, as I also knew the Sheriff's girlfriend (professional, definitely wasn't my type) as I was very active in professional organizations.
One other time that stands out, it was Labor day, my Girlfriend and I were coming back from a friend's party, where their house was, on the water, we would shoot skeet, and just could literally and legally shoot anything legal (now, Marsh Landing club is across the water and the Brumos Collection is at the end of the street)

Well, the fact that I had a full arsenal (in the 80s) under the hatch of the 928S, I was driving very carefully . A white 280Z flies by, but I resist jumping. A few minutes later, a JSO (Jacksonville Sheriff's Office) pulls behind me, and lights up the gumball machine
I pull over, he proceeds to tell me that he has been chasing me since the airport on I-95. I pointed out that was impossible, because I was coming from the Beaches, but again, didn't argue as he gave me a ticket, when I hadn't been speeding, hadn't done anything wrong but driving a White 928S, but having several guns, including a Vietnam training issue, but civilians zed AR15 with lots of accessories, 357 Desert Eagle and more

I didn't want to deal with explaining that even though I didn't do anything wrong.

I'm driving the red route JSO was coming from the Blue route

But another thing I remembered from one of my law enforcement friends, was the nicer the weapon, especially on a BS stop, the more likely that it may get "lost". I'm pushing 60, and never had a police beat down, have actually been given passes more than once, so what I learned must have worked.

I understood the question. You are completely capable of creating the same situation. Your just too rational, polite, and or maybe don’t drink enough?

If it was a female, same thing, maybe not taken to the ground but she’s getting cuffed. This never would have happened in Mayberry.
