Cops face almost no repercussions from their own behavior these days. He could have beaten the living **** of of him and damn near nothing would happen to him. BTW the kid got everything he deserved.

The father was in the video as well as a brother. The brother freaks out a bunch and the father is able to get him away to keep the situation from getting worse. The father told the cop that he (the father) had been away for a big portion of their lives and the two brothers only had each other. So it does seem like they didn't always have a father figure.

I watched the video and believe that the officer showed a great deal of restraint. He was patient, calm, and attempted to de-escalate the situation. He gave the youngster many opportunities to comply and the youngster challenged him multiple times in response. The youngster is what we call a "cell soldier", "keyboard warrior", or "netbanger". I believe the only reason that he challenged the officer was because he thought he could do it without repercussions. He would have never done that with another person because that person would not have shown restraint. The officer did a great job with his takedown and immediately attempted to restrain him and handcuff him. FANTASTIC JOB OFFICER!

I've read some of the posts on this thread about how the youngster's dad was not in the picture. That accounts for much of society, including many officers! I hope he learned a lesson.

I've had many people challenge me like that while on duty in uniform. One was a Crip in the projects. I told him to meet me at the boxing gym after I got off shift. Sure enough, we met and settled it. He brought some of his homies to watch. I humbly knocked his butt out in the second round and his homies told him that he "got knocked the fu$$ out!" After the fight, we shook hands and all was good. After that day, I walked through the projects and he and all his fellow gangsters were cool with me. I wasn't being a tough guy; however, he needed to be taught a lesson and not get seriously injured or in trouble. Problem solved and all was good.

The kid was out of line. Had he complied/stayed quiet, the outcome would have been very different. Compliance seems to be a big factor in most police interactions with bad outcomes for the "offender".

BTW - brass knuckles in his pocket tells me that he did not have much confidence in his fighting skills/striking power

I was walking in to court in brooklyn about 20 years ago and saw them under a bush while i finished my cig (I assume hidden by someone visiting the court which has metal detectors). Came out and they were still there so I grabbed them. Still have them but have never taken them out of the house - don't need the legal trouble

Im guessing most of you are past the parenting stage. Im not making excuses, but let me just say, that the world , is not the same world we came up in .
Parenting is tough stuff. Im sure it was tough in the 70's, but its a mess now .
Im doing my best . I taught my oldest about drugs, alchohol, work ethic, money , how to interract with people in general, but also law enforcement, and thugs, and bullies, adults, and friends.
I tried to instill solid values in him, and am trying to do the same with my little dude . They have so much outside influence that you have little control over, and you cant beat em ' anymore .
My oldest is autistic and kind of a dk at times, but would never talk to police like this. He did give teachers some guff though .. Never challenged anyone to a fight, , but his attitude, was more or less " what are you going to do about it ?"
You know what? There is not much you really can do . Take away their games, and phones. They don't care if they are grounded, no one plays outside anymore . Take away the car.... phhht, none of them want to drive .
Its a brave new world . Im Mr Momming my best . I hope my little dude turns out to be a productive , respectful kind human.

FF, you should be wearing a cape. You've certainly had things tough for a bit now. Yes, I can't imagine being in your position now. Things are crazy. Good luck, fella! I'm sure that you're doing a bang up job. Really, you can only guide them and hope they mostly follow the path that you show them. But they are individuals and will do what they are going to do.

i think you summed it up. everyone i know with kids has the same problems. i never had them but i see what is going on. cant be easy

i friend texted me only minutes ago and said that the college town he is visiting with his 12 year old kids today is over run with (college people, possibly they are men??) walking around with beards and a dress and breasts (women size) (all at the same time) and his kids are extremely confused and he has no idea how to deal with this.....i told him that fraternity parties these days don't sound like much fun but otherwise, i have no advice to give ...except I gave some voting advice :-)

Regarding the parenting thing......start with setting a good example for your children in EVERY thing you do.

Because they WATCH and ABSORB - EVERYTHING!

Also, keep an eye on who they hang out with in the hood. Anything to help get them in with children of like-minded parents is VERY helpful!

But yeah - it's different world today - and mostly because our societies values have crumbled.....

Interesting perspective and very on the mark. The adult in the situation, (the officer), puts the punk kid in his place without beating or abusing him, he simply restrained him, very efficiently I might add. Punk kid quickly realizes his mistake when he gets to actually feel the difference in strength between himself and the guy he was picking a fight with and gets real polite in a hurry. Win-win all around.

I've never had to learn that particular lesson in that particular way because I've always been smart enough to understand basic physics on a visceral level. You don't poke a 90 lb. dog or a 200+ lb. human just to, "see what will happen." I already know what will happen. It's like this young guy missed some basic part of his development(?)

When the cop was telling him to calm his brother by saying, "it's no big deal," all I could think of was the scene in the diner in Pulp Fiction where Samuel Jackson instructs the robber to tell Honeybun to stay cool.
