"I F___ed around, and I found out"
yup. me.
I've been feeling kinda unhealthy lately. I had switched over to my wife's health insurance and it was not good. with Hat in hand, I called my regular doc and made an appointment. (I am double insured. my work, and my wife's work). anyway. feeling tired. GI cramps/gas, weird skin lesions. myriad of blood tests and stuff. I had the markers of liver troubles. my liver was sending out an SOS!! lots of liver scans looking for the most sinister stuff, but apparently you can be regular on the outside and FAT on the insides. with a few test to go, they said I have NAFLD. non alcholic fatty liver disease. WTF? while they probed for other suspects, they told me I may as well start to eat better and exercise. when my brother said, he would donate a liver lobe to me if needed, I felt, "oh S! this is getting real!" I was mildly exercising anyways to get into fighting shape for a repeat Brazil Amazon river fishing trip, so I just hunkered down hard with exercise. I met with a Dietician and got the lay of the land, so to speak. it has been about 2 months in. no red meat, no white flours, no pasta, NO BOOZE. no sugar!! I wake up at 4:30 am and jog 40 minutes with the dog. we are both getting faster. no exceptions, except mornings I go fishing. if I fish, I climb a mountain with my mountain bike the following day. I'm not counting calories, but I did start using way smaller dinner plates and fill half of it with green veg, steamed or roasted. brown rice with Barley is my norm. no white rice as a Cantonese dude was tough!! all my symptoms are gone!! I am lighter. Doc orders are to lose 10% of my body fat by mid December. I am on the mark thus far. halfway there. my BP is low! Doc may take me off my tiny dose of BP meds. my resting HR is 68 now. I messed around with my health. eating too much, and the wrong stuff. drinking too much beer and whiskey. oh, I found out alright. Doctors gave me a FRIGHT! I got the call this weekend. no masses found in my liver. YAY!! I am looking at unhealthy food choices with extreme prejudices right now. once I get better, I may back off a schooch. my wife the nurse told me people end up in the hospital for one reason. "too much". too much bad food, too much smoking, too much booze, too much couch time, etc. its effen self inflicted chit!!

Way to go, Vash!
There are many who do not acknowledge the facts. The price for that can be fatal. Glad you listened and took positive action. Best Les

Outstanding! Congrats on fixing the issue.
You aren't around as much as you used to be, but you're everyone's favorite Vash, so we'd like to keep you around for as long as possible.

Congrats on getting "back" in shape.
My time is coming in 1Q25. I'm retiring and told the wife I'm going to focus a bit more on exercise and generally getting more flexibility. I told her I'm going to find a 29 year old blonde yoga instructor and she just said "Go for it!". I think she was using her sarcastic voice but maybe not.

Dude, I’m glad you are feeling better. I have a chronic kidney disease, so have to be careful with diet and exercise.
Went elk hunting for most of last week and realized at 50, it is steadily getting harder each year. We pounded out some serious miles and I lost weight just doing that. Nothing in the freezer as the ones we saw were on private land, but still almost my favorite activity of the year. |

Good! Glad you are on the right track. Most of the bad stuff is not just eating but getting regular exercise is also key. You just can't go our once a week and kill yourself, hike half dome or something crazy and expect to loose the lbs. I have to ditch 15 lbs from covid and my torn knee so I sat and ate, rice of course. Doc said, I am border line diabetic. Comes from my mother's side of the family so I have to cut carbs and that is hard to do. I love all rice, noodles, bread and potato. I stopped or ate small portion, an ice-cream scoop size several years ago and lost 15 lbs within 2 months but I was also riding my bike two to three times a week (120-150 very hard miles). I still do about 100 miles a week (resting heart rate is in the low 50s) but yet, I am still fat, 15 lbs over and have no discipline on food intake. Eating thick crest pizza right now. Asians aren't big people but are getting there with the good junk food, American diet. I see them overseas, they are thin, but they walk all over, including Europeans throughout Europe cities .

Cliff. You're a "getter done" type of guy. Lots of us wish we were as effective. We want to keep you around for as long as we can for inspiration.

Congrats on getting it under control.
I was chosen as a candidate for a NAFLD study because of my age and weight. I guess it's not easy to find 74 year olds who aren't overweight. ![]() I took the impact ultrasound test and turned out that I do not have any sign of NAFLD, so I am in the control group. They are testing me every year to see if I develop the disease. I had never even heard of it, but the tech told me NAFLD is the new heart attack. It sneaks up on you and before you even know you have it you are seriously ill.
