I forgive you. Damned good illustrations of how far the once mighty has fallen.

I was thinking about Schwinn bikes. When I was a kid, they were considered one of the best brands of bikes to 13 or 14 year old me. But with hindsight, the realization is, that they were heavy slow crap, but we didn't know any better.

50 years later, Schwinn bikes are considered to be entry level bikes sold at Amazon.
But, here's the thing.
A cheap Schwinn Sora is 100 times better than a 1969 Schwinn Continental, just because of the improvements made to bicycles over the years, and the inflation-adjusted price is about the same.

This bike would've been like something from outer space when I was cycling to school.

Home Depot has over 11 locations in NYC....Chelsea, Midtown, Harlem... two I know of don't show up in this screenshot... Canarsie... Bay Ridge might be the other..?

And many old time hardware stores survive in NYC... just because

Oddly though... Walmart has not been able to crack the NYC code...The closest one is in Nassau County..

Wait wait wait...are you saying that a $1000 bicycle is "cheap"? "Entry level"?

You need to get out more. Have you ever tried lawn bowling?

- Locally lots of older but still "active" ladies seem to love it.

How about JUNKYARDS WHERE YOU CAN PULL YOUR OWN PARTS.

I wanted to hit a few yards around the area I grew up going to all the time when I was 16-25ish... guess what? EVERY SINGLE ONE no longer allows you to walk the yard, for 'insurance reasons'. This sucks, because not only will it be harder for people without money to keep their cars on the road, you won't get people throwing VW chin spoilers on Civics and trying an alternator from a mondeo on their spark, etc. Basically, kit bashing stuff together from multiple manufacturers will become a thing of the past. I'm so sad for car guys just starting out today...

We have two of these fairly close by. I absolutely love going there. Fill a bucket full of tools and go to “town”.

They have their inventory on line and I keep checking for a rear door for my SAAB.

Wisconsin. Every yard in both Madison and Milwaukee, and most of them in a 1-2 hour radius are no longer allowing people in the yards 'for insurance reasons'.

I had a Schwinn, but I lusted after the "English bikes" a couple of the kids had. The 3 speed transmission and hand brakes seemed so exotic. I think the brand was Raleigh or something like that.
Once I got my first VW the Schwinn was forgotten. I don't know what happened to it.
