Food safety.

I take it seriously especially so I don’t make others sick.

I’m kinda stressing. You know how I feed my (now) 96 year old neighbor? Well, she has an announcement to make and she is doing a late lunch ( old people’s dinner is everyone else’s lunch. really) buffet style party to make it. She’s 96! When I bring her food, I typically will visit her first, then go into her kitchen to grab a plate or bowl to take home and fill up. She keeps all the vessels I used to bring over. Hell, I see them in her cupboards. I will search out the cleanest vessel, take it home, wash it, dry it and plate it up for her. Her dishes are not well washed! Stuck on food bits, stains, Bleech! The party will be 15 people. Not sure I can eat her cooking. Her food handlers card has surely expired. Haha. She leaves stuff on the counter at room temp.

I’m gonna not eat, or fake the heck out of it. I’ve warned my wife. And it’s on a work day! Monday! I have take time off!

Oh, that was cathartic to type out. I’m not OCD, not really. But come on!

Can you, your wife or a friend help with the prep to make sure everything is safe? Worst case maybe volunteer to do the grocery run that weekend so you know it is fresh?

Good luck!

My great uncle became a real miser in his later years. He would go to the butcher shop, buy some hamburger, set it on the counter, and fry some up and eat if off a flat plate. The next day, grab more burger from the counter, and fry it up, and just turn over the plate, and eat again. That went on until the burger was all gone.

He did not want to plug in the refrigerator, as it was expensive to run. I remember going over to his little house when I was a kid with my grandparents for a visit. Sitting on the try where he put his change, was a seated liberty quarter. I started drooling and looking at it closely. He sold it to me for a quarter. I still have it, and think of him when I see it.

He finally got senile enough to be put in a nursing home. He lived well into his late 80s. His immune system must have been battle hardened.

Yup it’s a thing. I would not eat there either.

My grandma was terrible for this. I helped my aunt clean out her fridge in 1995. Cheese slices turn black and develop a plastic like consistency over 10-15 years. She had stuff in there with price tags (remember those) from Woodwards. Woodwords sold their grocery business to Safeway in the early 80s… there were homemade pickled beets in the basement that said 1968 on the jar.

I lived with her for 2 years when I was in college. I never ate her cooking.

In the last year my dad was at home, he would go buy a bunch of fruit juice and coffee creamers that needed to be refrigerated and then leave them out on the counter, he had a fit when I dumped them all out as if I was the one that wasted it… seems to me it was wasted within 24 hours of him dragging it home.

I think their GI/immune systems adapt to it. But other peoples . . . pick the safest looking thing and nibble cautiously.

Was thinking about food management earlier this week. Going to do a purge on a lot of stuff I've had for a while. Starting with seasonings and spices. Would like to get my assortment down to maybe 5 different ones and that's it.

Strategy hatched. My wife is working so she’s safe. Me: I’m gonna show up late. I took her porridge this morning and told her I have a meeting at work first, then I’ll rush over. I’m not going to eat at all. Feign mandatory diet - doctors orders.

I took my porridge over in a small food thermos. Piping hot. I poured it into her bowl. She didn’t seem to mind me washing the bowl first. Haha. I told her I was warming her bowl.

In the past month I have cleaned out two freezers, and most of the kitchen cabinets.... found a can of brake fluid too??? Scary old stuff ... 10 years .

I'm not done ... mom doesn't belong in her kitchen any more ... I have never belonged there

Ya just gotta do....

The human body is an amazing machine. It's able to adapt to and thrive in scary conditions. I wouldn't want to eat there either. I would have to come up with some sort of excuse, and it sounds like you've got a good plan.

At least you can drink the water (assuming you wash the glass first).
