All I needed was a VPN???
I've been using free versions of various companies' cleaners, anti-virus, and anti-malware, etc. They seem to work well enough.
A coupla years ago, one of them sent a blurb about a free VPN. I took a look at whatever info they had and it looked (to me) like it might take somebody more internet savvy than me to set it up, so I didn't even try. Lately, I've been noticing that the VPN icon has been appearing at the bottom of the screen in the task bar (or whatever it's called). It appears, then blinks out... then reappears later. Rinse and repeat. I clicked on it tonight and it looked like it was setting itself up after I clicked on "CONNECT.". I'm now using the internet from somewhere in the UK. Of course they have a pay version that's faster, but I'm not going for that as long as this version works okay. So I thought why not click on my Pelican O/T bookmark. Bingo. I'm back like a bad habit. What did I miss? ![]() ![]()

If coming from a different IP/subnet lets you connect, it says that your "real" IP/subnet is being blocked or misrouted somewhere along the way....

You can't get there from here... you have to go elsewhere to get there from here

We tried several different things to get John connected. None of it worked, including using different DNS servers. We were pretty sure that it was "his network" or "his ISP" (fastfred has the same issue).
I'm glad you're back!

I'm glad that the issue has a work around. As I(we) thought, it's something with your home network/ISP which is pretty weird since it didn't seem to be DNS (one of the more common causes of weird issues). Kind of a bummer that we weren't able to figure out what it was, but I suspect that would have required me sitting at your keyboard which obviously wasn't going to happen.

The following story is absolutely true, the names have been changed to protect the innocent
![]() Curious Onlooker: Is the network problem fixed yet? Steve: It's working now. CO: Did you fix it? Steve: Nope! CO: What happened to cause "the network" to crash? Steve: Damned if I know .... I wasn't driving ![]() |
