Fence #2 & 3 and the Huge Root Removed

You may be getting sick of my projects but I'm showing them anyway .

This weekend I started two new fence projects. The first one is a short 10' fence between me and my neighbor's houses across the front. The second fence is started and is between my neighbors house.

When I got to the last post, I encountered a massive root growing around the old cement post holder. This chunk of cement had to come out as this post is the corner of my side fence and my back fence and is a critical post that cannot be re-located.

I was concerned about removing this very large root but my neighbor informed me that it was related to a tree that was removed a few years ago so it would not affect any living plants.

Fence #2 of 4

Starting Fence #3 of 4 (posts)

Finished Fence #1 of 4 (rebuilding entire back yard fencing)

The grain in that root wood is beautiful. What kind of wood? Seems to me there's a wood worker who would be delighted to have that chunk.

Really nice work! Beautiful!

But I was surprised that the houses were so close. Every place I have owed a home, there was a minimum setback requirement of at least 5 ft from the property line or more (so houses are never closer than 10 ft).

I agree - the houses are very close. It's a 95-year-old house so properties may have been closer back then. You can see in the photo that I have the smaller part of the space - it's possible that they added the garage which took up the original space.

This is going to be a short-term rental so I'm good with the smaller lot as it's less maintenance for me. When I'm done, the entire backyard will be patio style.

At some point I will go down to the county and get records (if available) on this house. The original lot was subdivided, and a house was built behind my house. There is a driveway to nowhere on the left side of the house which may have gone to a detached garage (now a house). It's possible that they built the current garage, on the right side, which explains the small remaining space on the side of the house.

Very nice work. Just thought I'd ask if it's been getting noticably hotter there in Fresberg - climate change? When I lived there in the 50s & 60s, it was hot during the summers, but we seemed to adapt to it. Temps of 105+ were farily normal.

Nice looking house. I looked through the abstract of our property. It was fascinating to see the former property owners, a farmer used the area for a wheat field until the 1960s. It went back to the land run and the name of the family that first settled it, after the US government took it from the Native American tribes. I guess every bit of the land in the US was former Native American land.

Anyway, it listed the developer that bought the property, and showed my property in a land plot. See if you can look at your abstract. We have no mortgage, so i stored my abstract for a year, and then turned it over to an abstract storage facility, and I have the receipt from them.

It definitely gets hot here in Fresno but it can be different from year to year. We always have days that are 110+ but some years it's 3 weeks straight and other years its every other week. Same goes for the winter and rain. I also think that it is affected by the development of the town. When I moved here in '78, we had 150k population and now it' over 500k - that's a lot of buildings and paved roads. With all the paving, we don't get the tule fog that we used to get.

110+ seems pretty hot. I remember during the summer of 1959, the temp was 105+ for about a week straight. It's something that stuck in my mind. We had a swamp cooler. I sat under the outlet vent some times. At that time I think the population was 97K. I agree the place has seemed to explode population wise. The few times I've been there in past decades, it seemed the part I knew was a small nucleus of what it is now. I graduated from Fresno H.S. about 65 years ago. The tule fog was scary. I got caught in it one time at night. I couldn't see two stripes of the center of the road ahead of the car, but I could look up and see the stars through the top of the windshield.

To be honest, it's not as bad as it sounds. Most of us (at least me) are in an air-conditioned office most of the day. The nights are perfect as you can drive with the windows down and it's very pleasant. Going out in the daytime during the hot summers is not so great. Most mornings are nice too. When we do get the 115 degree days, sometimes it doesn't cool off at night and that's not so great but usually a short period of time.

The balmy summer nights is something I'll always miss. There's a feeling about them that can't be replicated anywhere I've been.

I never went to a school with AC. San Marcos, TX, Montgomery, AL and Oklahoma City get 100+ degrees most summers. I can remember sweat dripping from my nose as I filled out a test. We did not get a house with AC until I was in the 11th grade.

Now days, I have two cars with fantastic AC, and our house is cool. Outside work is done in the mornings.

Again I'm going to recommend Total Wood Preservative by Amteco. I've tried three different preservatives/stains, and it was hands down the best. It's too bad we can't get the oil based here in California, but I used the water based and it was still very high quality.
