I had one of those when I was 18. I think about it often.
Mine had the standard engine and was a two door. But it had large wheels on it to at least look the part. I think it went reasonably fast because it was so light other than being powerful. And back in those days most cars around here were slow. Mine was an ex Kodak sales rep car so looked gorgeous in yellow

Iconic cars.
Simple, light and great power to weight. The working man's car in the U.K back in the '70s and British roads were flooded with them, all now gone and rusted away. Not really well known in the U.S, but globally loved.

Not the same animal but I had an early 70's Capri coupe . Built in Germany if I remember correctly and sold in the US via Mercury dealers . Mine was a V6 and manual transmission . Red over black . Was a VERY fun car to drive . I wish I still had it .

Yep, that's the one. I believe i'd take that over a tricked out longhood for fun blasting around and track days.

It was the number one rally car for the time around here. A common upgrade was to put the engine, diff and brakes from a Capri into a two door Escort.
This is a particularly nice build. There are still lots of them in going order around here.

I'm assuming the Vega and Monza were supposed to be similar for the US market, but I don't think they caught on the same, probably not as good a starting point. And I've heard that the Pinto can actually be made to be a decent little track car, but there was a small matter of the explosive rear.

V6 Monza Spider was a cool car. Doubt it was as light as this one though.
Cosworth Vega might have been closer. Don't think Ford did anything interesting with Pintos. An 80's Thunderbird Turbo Coupe engine in one would be fun. Last edited by thingmon; 04-24-2025 at 02:14 PM.. |
