Oil Additives added to full synthetic oil?

I just did a full synthetic oil change on my 07' GM 6.2 liter truck with 168k miles. Now that the oil is clean, I was wondering if adding an oil additive would be of any benefit. I did a search back to 2019 and did not find any similar question and/or answer.

Thanks

I wouldn't think a quality synthetic would need any additive in a vehicle in good shape.

I'm making some popcorn, then sitting back and waiting for the replies...if you go to the tech forum you might find a long thread on oil.

For me, my 'decent' cars get a good quality synthetic, with no additives ever. If you're not burning oil in your truck, something like Mobil1 on its own would be all I would use.

My crappy cars get the cheapest thing I can find, then an additive (too thicken) if it burns oil.

Send a sample or two to Blackstone and see what's going on. They will let you know if some unusual wear is present and other issues like gas/water in the oil. If the metals are low then I don't think you need to add an additive. If you want to read something interesting look up the history of Slick50.

The oil companies have a team of talented engineers and chemists formulate the oil to the best it can be. Don't use the cheapest oil, use the good stuff, and you are fine. Adding a can of some additive can make things worse.

OK, thanks, guys! It doesn't burn or use oil. I was just wondering since the oil is now clean.

I just did a deep read on Blackstone. I'm not going to be able to recall the acronym for a specific test, but the test is looking for additive consumption. So, in short, they need well used oil to compare to their base. It's not just looking for the presence of metals. But in some cases, the lack thereof.

I run archoil 9100 in my powerstroke. It does make a significant difference in cold weather.

Was following a truck hauling a landscape trailer half loaded and it was working. Blowing blue smoke (cough cough) so I expected to pass a Ram but it was a fairly new Duramax.

I’m driving an ‘03 6.0L gas chev and regularly change oil every 3000 miles with regular oil. No additives.

All consumer motor oil is a blend and has additives. The question is, do you want to mess with it?

What was STP? Simply a thickening agent on hand at all refineries to help blend oil to a specific grade. Then some cat bottled it. Go ahead, thicken your oil.

Or buy the next heaviest grade.

Ask lubie…

You’ve been around long enough to know of our resident tribologist, though he doesn’t post as much as he once did.

Yes, I've actually met Lubie a number of years ago. I rarely see him on here, but I think I got my answer(s) and won't worry about an additive. Thanks all!

One situation you need special additives is on motorcycles, ATV, or SxS that run a wet clutch.

How do you think multi-grade is achieved? Viscosity modifiers + Pour point-depressants.
Do not want to wipe the cams? Zinc additives. Long life? Detergents.

Basically, a pure synth oil would not be a good oil in ICE engine. Jet turbine, yes.

Ah, one more thing. Most of oils you believe are "synthetic" are just cracked mineral oils.

Look for JASO MA on the bottle for wet clutches

Yah. Like beepbeep says.

In the US "synthetic" was turned into a marketing term long ago. US Mobil 1 apparently couldn't be called "synthetic" in Europe, where "synthetic" really does mean "synthetic". By law.

Mobil 1 sold in Europe is full synthetic - and not the same as the US-market Mobil 1. Fun, eh?

The infamous oil thread in the tech forum ~20 years ago that ran for many (so many) pages covers this.

Doesn't mean full synthetic oil isn't available in the US, or that US oils labelled "synthetic" aren't good. I ran Rotella in the 930 for many years before switching to Liqui Moly 2332..

You should just use a good straight oil for your vehicle. Oil additives mess with the original additive package, frequently causing more harm than good.
