Crow story

This popped up in my feed. Its not a happy ending but its worth watching anyway.
Ive rescued alot of animals over the years and had some interesting relationships with wild life but not like this, have you?

A few summers back I had met a crow when camping in BC.
This bird was hanging around the campsites stealing food unattended on tables and at breakfast one day it dropped down to take some biscuit from my hand. We had a small game of tug of war and shortly after it came back with a small stick to continue the game. I named it Crazy Bird and it seemed to know its name.
After a week in the campground we had a rental cabin in town and I woke up to find a large group (murder) of crows in the back yard. I called out Crazy Bird and the darn thing flew from the group and landed on my shoulder. Never saw it again but I still call for the crazy bird when I visit the town and see crows. Will see if I can find some photos.
Sad ending to the video but in the wild these things happen.

One of my wife's co-workers lives in a rural area on 20 acres. They had a tree fall over on the property, and there was a crow's nest on the top of the tree, now on the ground. The baby crow was just starting to get feathers.

They took it inside, and cared and fed it until it was able to fly. They let it stay in their barn, but it was able to fly around outside. It had a real fascination with shiny objects. Many of the husband's sockets were found in the crow's nest in the barn. Soon it figured out several games they played with it.

And tools started showing up from other properties. If the wild crows saw it, they would beat it up, so it would retreat to the barn, and the protection of humans. It lived many years and pet semi wild bird.

There was a documentary on PBS/Nature called A Murder of Crows I think that I saw about 15 years ago and I recall it discussed crows interests in shiny things

There was another similar documentary, maybe also by Nature, that was about turkeys that was equally as interesting that I saw maybe 10 years ago

We have many crows in our area. And there are three fast food places about a mile from here as the crow flies. My wife has a bird bath in one of the gardens in the front yard. The crows use it all the time. They bring in pieces of bread, likely hamburger buns the low life litterbugs toss out. The crows bring hunks of bread to the birdbath. We don't know if they are bringing a give, or if they are "stashing" it for later. Of course it just turns to goo soaking in the water. Mrs. Carrera has to flush out the birdbath regularly as it gets rather nasty. And yea, there are mosquito pellets in there that say they are bird friendly, just deadly to skeeter larve.

Thanks for sharing.
I've found a dead crow on my property and for a couple of day all the other crows made a huge racket.

Great video Ramonesfreak! Magpies are also part of the Corvidae family and can also recognize individual human faces. There's a fair number that live in our neighborhood. A few years ago (immediately after we had an extermination service spray our exterior for box elder bugs) a female came to the back deck to investigate all the dead bugs. I made a point of waving to her, and also quickly put out a small dish with dry dog food next to the bug carcasses. It took a few weeks for her to become acclimated to me, but now she does stop by with her kin in the Fall & Winter for dog food. I also make sure that she and her group share in our Thanksgiving Day feast. Here's a quick video from a few years ago...

There was someone in the comments under that video that had a similar story and believed what they had witnessed was a sort of bird funeral

I love the connection that animals have with one another. A few weeks ago I made a post about a hawk in my yard that caught a squirrel. What amazed me most about this unpleasant scene was a blue bird that flew to the scene and started pecking at the hawks head and another squirrel was literally punching the hawk with its front paws, both seeming to try to rescue the victim.

Makes you wonder

I often wonder about humans in less than positive way sometimes too

A few years back, I came home from work, went to the basement to feed my fish and heard a faint squeak. I looked around and found a baby mouse on the ground, a few days old with its eyes not even open yet.

I called around and nobody would help. My friends and co-workers told me to throw it out the window of a moving car and one person told me to put it down the garbage disposal. I thought this sick and disturbing.

Despite what I read about baby mice survival, my wife and I were determined to help this baby mouse. We got some kitten formula and fed it with a paint brush. We fed it several times an hour around the clock for many weeks and it lived in its large home heated by a heating pad from underneath. I would have to sneak out of my office and drive 40 miles each way throughout the day and my wife would get up with me during the night talking turns to hand feed it. After a few months, it grew strong and went through all the phases that a baby mouse goes through. Henry the mouse lived 6 years and only died last November. We believe his love of fresh blueberries he received every day accounts for his long life. Becoming a mouse parent was not always fun but in the end it was worth it and we learned a lot and we could see him communicating in his mousey ways that he appreciated our help.

Anyway, there is much to be learned by interacting with animals beyond just our dogs and cats that we love

My son told me last summer they were at a pond feeding ducks when he noticed a crow on a rock off to one side. He took a small handful of corn and placed it on the rock ,"just to be fair". The crow flew down and ate the corn and, when it was done, flew off again. A few minutes later, he noted that the crow had returned briefly to the rock and when he walked by on their way back to the car, there was a shiny stone. A gift? Payment?

Best

My guess is it was a message to other crows that this is a good spot to find an easy meal, or a reminder to himself that this is a good spot.

Like marking a hot fishing spot on your fish finder

Very interesting

If you've not watched the documentary on PBS called "Murder of Crows" is worth a watch. The experiment with the plexiglass was done in the doc as well. I think you can still get it on Amazon or Netflix.

I watched it years ago. It was good.

And "My Life as a Turkey". It was also pretty good.

Mom raised a blue jay chick that had been blown from it's nest.

It stayed around all summer. It would land on my head or shoulder and raise hell at anyone that approached us. Neighborhood kids named it OJ the Blue Jay.

I had never seen a Magpie until I went to Korea. This is a short video of one at Folk Village that we toured.
