My Danish girlfriend loved pickled herring (sardines are herring). She would put some pickled herring on a slice of rugbrot (not spelled correctly), which is a kind of paving material that passes for bread in Denmark, with a slice of onion and a slice of a boiled egg. I could handle it if I had a beer for a chaser.

I eat them. My wife makes me take them outside because of the smell. Therefore, they are a favorite on race weekends at the track.

My German dad loved pickled herring . From what I remember the sardines were in a white sauce . I never cared for them but everyone has different tastes .

it's funny how things come and go in buying food. I used to get sardines often many years ago, Nuri was a favorite, spiced in olive oil on toasted sourdough with onions, sometimes tomato, sometimes jalepeno and sardines in olive oil with dill, cucumber and onion. Will have to get some now, found a new sourdough bread that should be good to try.

I don't anything from a can--literally nothing. I've never tried sardines, though I've smelled them when my wife's boys wanted to try them. Stunk the house up for hours--disgusting (to me).

Aren't they super salty?

Have you ever tried these anchovies? They're not like your typical anchovies, they're meaty like sardines. They come in different flavors and also in just plain olive oil. I love canned seafood!

I had these on a caesar recently, thought they were perfect. Rich flavor, fishy in the right way against the garlic lemon cheese of the dressing. A caesar anchovy sandwich on a proper baguette would be great with these.

Love them, especially in pasta with dried black olives.

Meaty sardines? That's an oxymoron, like jumbo shrimp.

We were at a Chinese seafood restaurant (real Chinese) recently with tanks at one end of the dining room with various fish and lobster and huge prawns (probably a quarter to half a pound each) swimming around. Two (about 3-5 lb) fish and many prawns were scooped out to met their fate that lunch.

There's a lot of wisdom in that. I do my best to be an octopus.

I've eaten sardines for a long time. Usually in mustard sauce, on saltines or Bremner wafers. Adding chopped red onion or shallots and/or capers is a bonus. Some of the stuff they can in Spain is another level above the usual grocery store brands, if you can find it.

Always have anchovies on hand, as I cook a lot of Italian food. The ones packed in salt are better than the ones packed in oil but are harder to find and require a little prep to use. No anchovy paste for me....

Better than all of that is locally smoked fish, especially salmon or trout.

Canned anchovies are the ones that you're thinking of that are super salty. I've never noticed that sardines are salty.

I don't eat them very often as my wife objects to the smell.

I do like them and I keep a few stashed in my hunting/fishing pack, my truck, my desk at work...

I like the King Oscar and Tiny Tots. I have been branching out to a few others when I see them in the store.

My son's fiance has been deer hunting with us. One rainy day this fall she was in my stand. When I went there the next day my sardines were eaten, but she did leave a nice note.

She gifted me some canned cod livers a few weeks ago. The taste is OK, but the texture is gooey. I need to try something more than just eating them with a fork....

If you like the flavor of smoked meats, then you might like these. They have a great smoky flavor.
MW Polar smoked, Brisling sardines in olive oil.
