Awesome weekend for the history books - Racing against my boy!

What an amazing weekend. 15 years in the making.

I finally got to race against my son who just turned 15.

Saturday he blew a tire in practice. A fellow competitor loaned him a tire so we could both stay in class. He qualified slightly quicker than me but I had him in the dirst race until I spun right in front of him on the last lap. He got me. In the last race, he got me on the start and I couldn’t catch him.

Today was a different story. He spun and put it on the gravel in the first race so finished an about 5 laps down. The second race we got to play on the rain and I got him in corner 1. The third race, I blew a tire and he got me. The last race, I ran our endurance tires (so ran out of class) but still in the Spec Miata run group and run order. I got an incredible start and lead for a bit. I wound of holding him off and beating him.

In the father - son championship, we have a draw for the weekend with 3 races each.

Why so many blown tires? What pressures are you running?

Blown tires? Not sure. This is a new spec tire for our series.

We were both running 32psi hot and these have a stiff outer sidewall.

His tire had maybe 3 laps on it. You can read the brand on the tread still.

I reinflated mine and it still holds air so obviously coming off the bead.

We did an endurance race together last year in his car. This time it was against each other.

I used to race a lot with ChampCar (then ChumpCar), we did LagunaSeca, Calgary, The Ridge, Spokane, Daytona, Brainerd, and some others. I actually prefer Lucky Dog now - it’s run by a Chris and Kathy from Chump and they have managed to maintain that ‘early days ChumpCar’ fun and antics at their events.

Good luck. I prefer endurance racing to sprint racing but any time behind the wheel in a race car is great.

We are not there yet. When he was karting, I had a radio set up for him and he didn’t like taking ‘suggestions’ from me during practice and removed it from his kart.

Color me envious. What a fantastic way to spend time with your son. We don't race, but my two sones ('68 912/911 and '79 911 SC) chase each other around the track at DE days. Or we used to, anyway. Their careers and family take their time these days, making it difficult.

Hopefully, in your case, your son can continue to find the time as his adult responsibilities start to creep in. For now, though enjoy every moment of this. This is truly special, believe me, as a guy who pines for the day that we all had more time. Soak it up. Bask in it. You are a very lucky man.
