The one in the Caucasus

I was working in West Palm Beach in the '90 at the Sikorsky flight test center...I'd go south once a month or so.

Hurricane coming, the hotel in West Palm bids us all adieu and I decide to head north up 95 'cause:

I drive for what I think is good separation from the storm.

Nope.

Like most hurricanes, it turns north and, as a low Cat 2, goes right over the hotel I am staying at. We are all fine.

West Palm didn't get a rain band.

Was the point I was trying to make about evacuating. Where are you going to go without it turning into a day or two's worth of driving? No thanks.

BTW - extra points for the "An Officer and a Gentleman" reference!!!

This is me. With Irma, I stayed but my wife and son went to Orlando, then North Carolina when it appeared Orlando was in the path. I can’t imagine being stuck in traffic trying to go north. There are too many people and not enough lanes for anything to move. You would have leave days in advance to minimize the hassle.

I drove from Destin to Tampa years ago. I can’t imaging trying to cram tens of thousands of people into those roads.

My wife is terrified of storms, so we evacuate. We do have a generator that is big enough to power the fridge and a few things, along with a window AC to keep one bedroom cool.

We were fortunate that we didn’t get water in our house from Milton, but many of our neighbors did. And many houses are for sale, but not all got water in them.

My damage was outside, dock lift, pool pumps, pool heater, and underwater light controls.

We have been here for 11 years and the most damage we had was from Ian. But that was only around $35,000 and the insurance covered most of that.

Hopefully we can get through this year without a big one. Except I could use a new roof.

Erin went from not-a-hurricane to Cat 5 hurricane in less than two days, and is now the second most powerful Atlantic hurricane in history measured by pressure. Fortunately it doesn’t look like it will make landfall.

We were vacationing in Destin when Sally rolled through back in September of 2020. The day before Sally made landfall was my birthday and I was having a few brews that night and accidentally locked myself out of the house. Everyone at the house was asleep upstairs and I knew no one would hear me banging on the door to be let back in so I just had to make the best of it for a while. The house had a porch across the front that also went down one side and then stopped at a wall so, I just hunkered down in the corner and was pretty well protected, and fell asleep, er, uh, passed out. I would wake up from time to time when palm tree pieces would get blown onto the porch.

I will just leave this here. Very diverse headlines on an event where presumably each ‘news’ source has access to the same factual information… BBC and ABC.

I have a coworker that is from the Virgin Islands and has family there. She watches the weather like a hawk during the storm season.

I send prayers all the time for the folks on the island nations.

I understand the media's focus is primarily always going to be how the US will be affected, but those of us who have gone through these fully understand how destructive they can be no matter where you are.

I charged the battery on my generator overnight and just came in from a test run. She started right up and purred like a kitten for my 5 minute test run. I always use non-ethanol gas and it really helps. The tank is now full and I may add a touch of Stabil today just to add some fuel stability.

Having an electric start on my generator is no different than having one on my motorcycles. Just so much more convenient. Mine can also be started with a pull rope and can use propane for fuel.

Here is my old 5K BTU Zenith window AC that stayed in place year round, until I replaced her in 2021 with a new Toshiba. I also have a duplicate still in it's box. And a larger BTU version that I keep in it's box, in case of extended outages.

Zenith:

Toshiba:

This is the larger 8K BTU unit in place in another of my windows during the September 2017 Irma power outage here:

And my trusty little Rainier dual fuel generator with electric start........

And I have the same generator still in it's box in reserve, just in case.

Backups and contingencies......and it still won't be enough. But every bit helps......

Sounds like you are as prepared as one can be, Baz. Good luck to you and everyone along the coast and eastern seaboard and hoping that Erin makes that predicted turn out to sea and is a non event.

Thanks, Marty. I still have a list of things to do but should have the time to do so.

The surf here is starting to pick up from Erin - should be rocking by tomorrow!
